Fernando TorresI suppose it was only a matter of time before Arsenal got linked to Chelsea striker/punchline, Fernando Torres. At least the culprits, The Mirror, had the good sense to note that the Gunners view him as a partner to their top transfer target, Gonzalo Higuain.

Imagine the fuss that would have been created if Arsene Wenger singled out Torres as his main transfer target this summer. The sound of Arsenal fan’s indignant outrage would be deafening.

But it’s easy to see where this rumour has come from. One thing Arsenal seemed to lack last season was a goal-scoring centre-forward. Sure, Olivier Giroud chipped in with a few, but he was hardly inspirational. The Frenchman has a long way to go before truly establishing himself in the Premier League.

It’s clear that Arsene Wenger will be on the hunt for a striker this summer. It wouldn’t surprise me either, if Chelsea are willing to sell their hapless Spaniard. The Mirror claims that Mourinho has singled out five ‘certain starters’ for next season and that the rest of the squad will have to prove itself.  Naturally, Torres is not among those five players.

Torres himself may fancy a change in surroundings, as an attempt to re-boot his career.

But should Arsenal really be interested in a man who has only scored 34 goals in 131 games for Chelsea? After last season, don’t they really need a player with a proven goal-scoring record?

It strikes me that Fernando Torres is football’s ultimate ‘fixer-upper’. He’s the bad boyfriend that girls think they can transform into the man of their dreams. In football terms, he’s the goal-shy centre-forward, who’s just waiting for the confidence boost he needs to start scoring on a regular basis.

In other words, he’s a gamble. Whilst many will scoff and claim that the Gunners should stay well clear of Torres, I think Arsenal have to play the odds. In the end, it all comes down to price. If Chelsea are willing to sell Torres for a fair-price, then he may be worth considering.

Despite his troubles since leaving Liverpool, he’s still a player in the Arsenal mould. He has technique, pace and can score some truly fantastic goals on his day.

As long as he’s not the Gunners’ main signing and Chelsea let him go on the cheap, he may be worth the gamble. If Chelsea are looking to haggle and get as much as they can for him, Arsenal should stay well clear.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal really consider signing Fernando Torres?

We’ve played the odds enough.. been there done that… we need someone solid and proven now. If we keep using the same hit and hope tactic we won’t get anywhere.

Arsenal scored 2 goals less last season than the season before with gold boot v p why is it big that arsenal can’t do without a word class striker the prob was defence now sorted not a strker

    • mike says:

its the fact that arsenal dont have strikers which can show up big and score on big occasions, like the RVP hattrick against chelsea, 2 seasons ago

  • mapesa says:

Torres is off balance, bring us Wayne

  • Ola says:

Arsenal should snap him up so they can use him as second chioce striker, he is far better than giroud in attack.

Torres is a player i love so much, while at liverpool he was so fantastic.i belive arsen wenger has this magic of tranforming not so good a striker to a very good one.asenal should give a chance to prove himself.

why do we have to accept cast aways from other lesser clubs – all i read is about old age pensioners joining us or players who did not crack it at their current clubs. Do we not already have enough dead wood? Get some more ball players – why was Tevez not take into consideration – surely a better bet than Torres! what about a strong midfielder in the mould of Filanie… we are far from a cup winning combination… Have there been any murmurs at all to sort out our lacklustre defence? Wenger is barking up the wrong tree one more time – Many of the incomming talked abouts will go the same way as Jorou and Coquline – we pay the heavy tfr fees and lend them to other clubs at a reduced salary and we fork in the rest – NNO SILVERWARE FOR ARSENAL IF THISCONTINUES – AND NO CHANGE OF ATTITUDE IS IN SIGHT. CHELSEA ARE QUIETLY GETTING THE DROP ON US A G A I N !!!!!

Easy mate. Stop moaning. It’s all a bad rumour that will soon go away. Go get yourself a cup of what-so-ever you love drinking.

All Torres needs is a team to play to him he scores a lot more freely for Spain then Chelsea. We all know in the right team he can score goals. I for one would be more happy seeing Torres then a certain Wayne!!! And why did we not even look at Carroll

  • Mannix says:

I totally agree with mapesa, I prefer Rooney more than any striker arsenal tend to sign this season… Looking Arsenal in all angle I see a very lethal team which can challenge any giants and give them a run for their own money but lack of leadership, self believe and desire to fight on is what costs arsenal every season since Viera left but having a player like Rooney can motivate, rejuvenate and instill confidence in players coz Rooney is a fighter and most important a no nosense fellow who can’t entertain laxity among his team mates.

  • Mannix says:

Do not under estimate the current arsenal squad, they managed to shake bayern and almost succeeded to stop them at their own backyard,,, what arsenal need is relentless fighting spirit which Rooney can motivate that, his power, his killer pass, his unselfish team work is what needed in arsenal than just a goal scoring machine.
