Ashley WilliamsI’m sure Ashley Williams is perfectly content at Swansea City. He’s the captain of a Capital One Cup winning side. A side who play fantastic, free-flowing football and have a great forward thinking manager. He’s also held in extremely high regard by fans, who rightfully treat him like some kind of earth-bound deity.

It would be easy enough for him to see out his career with the Swans and become a club legend. On the other hand, he may fancy a new challenge.

At 28-years-old, Williams now has a one-or-two year window where a move to a big club would still be viable. No matter how highly-regarded he is when he’s in his 30s, clubs are unlikely to make that investment when they know he will offer no re-sell value. I wonder if this is preying on his mind

He’s reached the stage in his career where he needs to decide how he’ll be remembered. Wouldn’t it be great to see Williams duking it out in the Champions League?

The rugged Welsh centre-back has earned himself a £10m price-tag, along with the interest of clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool.

Young centre-back Ben Davies recently spoke about the value of his defensive partner:

“A price of £10million for Ash is completely justified when you see some of the money being spent, especially on foreign players who are unproven in the Premier League. That would be a fair price but it would still be a massive loss for us.

Last season he was one of the best centre-halves in the league, especially when you consider the team he is in and doesn’t have the very best midfielders in front of him helping out.” (Source: The Mirror)

It’s hard to disagree with the youngster. Indeed, should Williams move on for just £10m, I think most would consider that to be a bargain.

His price-tag isn’t all that surprising given that the he recently extended his contract to run until 2015. He clearly doesn’t want City to make a loss should he move on.

As for his destination, both Arsenal and Liverpool look like perfect fits. Both clubs are in desperate need of some defensive recruits and Williams is one of the very best available.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a transfer battle broke out and Williams’ price-tag begun to inflate. The smart move would be to get in quick whilst he’s still affordable!

What’s your take? What does this future hold for Ashley Williams?
