Should Spurs resign themselves to losing Gareth Bale?

GarethBaleInterMilanThere’s no real way of quantifying exactly how important Gareth Bale is for Spurs.

The Welsh wizard is probably the third best player in the world at the moment and at 24-years-old, he’s only likely to get better. That, in itself, is rather a scary thought.

Whilst there’s always been something special about Bale (he hasn’t exactly hidden his talent under a bushel), he seemed to kick things up another notch last season.

With both Jermaine Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor flattering to deceive, Bale took it upon himself to provide Tottenham’s primary goal-threat. That’s why he scored 26 goals in 44 games, despite being (primarily) a winger.

But he provides so much more beyond his goal-threat. His energy, drive, pace and power make him one of the most dangerous men in the Premier League.

Whilst Tottenham fans are fed up with all the discussion of Bale’s future, it’s only natural that he’d start attracting attention from some of Europe’s biggest and brightest. Real Madrid, in particular, are thought to be interested.

According to Spanish source Marca, Real are zeroing in on a six-year deal for Gareth Bale, that would see the Welsh sensation earn £8.5m a year. The source also claims that Real’s president, Florentino Perez has declared: ‘Bale was born to play for Real Madrid’.

As the Daily Mail note, Perez is a man who is used to getting his way in the transfer market. If he has the hots for Bale, Spurs have every reason to be concerned.

Real Madrid have previously spent £80m on Cristiano Ronaldo. That’s probably how much it would take (if not more) to tempt Spurs into selling. If any club in the world can make a deal for Bale happen, it’s this one.

Surely by now it’s time to accept that Bale will leave eventually. If it doesn’t happen this summer, it’ll happen next year. All the speculation regarding Bale can’t be healthy. Andre Villas-Boas needs to be able to plan effectively for his club’s future, but that’s impossible at the moment.

It’s also worth considering how much money Spurs could make from Bale’s sale. AVB would be able to use this money to make multiple world-class signings. Tottenham would have a better rounded squad and the accusations of being a one man team would come to an end.

This article may feel a little fatalistic, but given Tottenham’s current status in the game, there’s no way Bale’s going to see out his career at White Hart Lane. He’s destined for bigger and better things. The sooner Spurs realise this and put a plan in place, the better.

What’s your take? Is it time to for Tottenham to accept defeat when it comes to Gareth Bale?

Is this really the best you can do in the way of an article? No wonder the media rate just barely above politicians in the public view

  • gene says:

    Short answer NO!

  • Mike says:

I agree, when will the press get off his back and stop presuming what he wants. When you saw the delight in scoring against West Ham it makes me wonder how many people are on an little earner from him moving.

  • Ray says:

What an insipid article written by a nonse.

  • john says:

Next time write the article yourself instead of getting your 6 year son to do it.

  • Joe Fitz says:

sounds like a lack of ambition. Tell Madrid to get stuffed cos Bale aint for sale this year. Next year is next year and we will see what happens. Why should Spurs discuss selling if they don’t want to. Its not that complicated.

  • Mikee says:

Oh well, if it’s been reported by the journalistic giants of ‘The Mail’ and ‘Marca’, it must be true. As the saying goes, don’t let the truth get in the way of a story. I wouldn’t trust either of them to get the date right.

  • Dubz says:

why should we resign ourselves to losing Bale?? because Madrid have done all in their greasy power to tap him up and unsettle the club?? Marca is a rag full of lies as soon as any site, article or “journalist” quote or reference Marca in my eyes they lose any credit they might have had which isnt a lot. The sooner people like you stick to your crayons and colouring books the sooner football will rid itself of the bullsh1t and sensationalism infecting the game. Youre a bit of a twat Harry Cloke.

I’m sick of hearing, is he going, is he staying, if Bale’s commitment was with Spurs, he would have signed a new contract at the end of last season. I think he is no different to most players….greedy, he’s not bothered what shirt he puts on. If he wants to go, let him go, but under DL’s terms. Spurs was a big club before him and will still be a big club long after he has gone.

Spot on. Starting to feel like Dalmio all over again. If his heart is not lilywhite let him loose. Adios Señor Bale dont let the door hit you on your way out. Mr Levy will cash in.
If he believes in the project and the colours pay him what he deserves. We were in the ascendency before he started to progress from a wet lettuce LB to what Spurs have made him today. We will continue do to so.

    • Dave says:

Absolutely 100 percent agree with that

    • Bogus says:

they agreed a provisional contract improvement at the end of the season by handshake. His contract was renewed at the start of last season, its now being renewed one year on from that date. The only mind games and conspiracies are coming from Real/Marca and idle journalists. He’s agreeing a £150k a week contract, Marca report Real are willing to offer £300k, Adey earns £190k (£100k paid by City). No ones being greedy, he’s been paid inline with the progress he’s making, if anything we’d rather not be paying those sort of wages to anyone before we have the new stadium, but he’s worth the little extra i think

  • Bob says:

Really poor article. This is a non story, created by the unofficial mouthpiece of Real Madrid that is Marca. One would really think they had more important things to report on like a dreadful train smash rather than devoting pages and pages of nonsense to try to unsettle a footballer. You might also think Real Madrid have lost their moral compass allegedly offering £100m for a 24 year man, £8.5m per year in salary, while the country suffers from 25% unemployment, banks and country are bailed out by billions of pounds while Madrid have their debts of £1b written off by the Spanish government. Marca and Real Madrid have really sunk to new depths and people like this author, without any real original thoughts of his own, simply regurgitates this nonsense almost parrot fashion.

  • Joe says:

I think Spurs should let him go. Spurs had so many good players over the years who pledged their commitment to the club but when the opportunity knocks they leave. They know they won’t last long in any these days. They will be offloaded when a better players appears. Imagine retiring from active football (and the money that comes with it) by the age of 30 or so? Gone were the days of players ending their football career with a particular club.
The uncertainties on Bale would/may already cause problems with the other players. We have seen this before but that time over the manager i.e Redknapp being England Manager, and i personally believe that cost us the CL opp the previous season. Spurs is not a one man squad. Its a team. Players, managers, coach, fans, etc.
With the money from the sale of Bale, (50 millions pounds, is that for real ? or in this case from Real 🙂 ) we may able to buy several good and young players that can contribute for many years to the club.
