This Arsenal target would offer ‘real thrust’: should they seal the deal?

Victor WanyamaIt’s been thought for a while now that Arsenal need to add a bit of steel to their midfield.

Santi Cazorla may well have been voted Arsenal’s Player of the Season, but he didn’t receive this accolade for his rugged, physical displays. He’s a technically gifted, forward-minded player, much like Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere, Arsenal’s two other most important midfielders.

Alex Song, Arsenal’s last proper out-and-out defensive midfielder (though he was renowned for his lack of discipline and his willingness to get forward) was shipped to Barcelona last summer. Fans and pundits alike assumed that Arsene would use money from the deal to finance a move for a midfielder who could protect the likes of Wilshere and Cazorla.

They were wrong. Though moves for players like Yann M’Vila and Etienne Capoue were mooted, nothing came to fruition.

As a result, Mikel Arteta has spent most of the season doing the dirty work in front of Arsenal’s back-four. There are plenty of fans who would rather see him further up the pitch, but he’s had to be disciplined and work from a defensive mind-set. The truth is, however, he’s not got the physicality to truly boss a midfield.

So it wouldn’t surprise me if Arsenal did turn to somebody with the strength and power to dominate opposition midfields. And who better to do this than Celtic’s midfield powerhouse, Victor Wanyama?

The 21-year-old has made waves at Parkhead this year, impressing with his confident, energetic displays in the centre of the park. He’s not afraid to put his body on the line, use a bit of force where necessary and commit himself to tackles. He’s the kind of player that gives opposition midfielders something to think about.

Arsenal hero Perry Groves has been talking up the young Kenyan: “I really like Wanyama – he is destined for big things. He may be young but he plays for a massive club, has lots of experience for a young player, and he fits the Wenger model – he is hungry, strong and technically very good. He would offer real protection for the back four, and a real thrust and drive going forward.” (Source: The Express)

If Perry’s for him, so am I. The player himself seems to be looking for a new challenge. If Arsene Wenger can negotiate a good deal for the youngster, he’d represent a very good addition.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal look to snap up Victor Wanyama this summer?

Victor Wanyama will be great player for arsenal if wenger can buy him. Wenger speculates and allow other teams to buy .

So much wrong – Song was not an “out and out defensive mid”, he was a muscular central midfielder, but he never played as the deepest-lying in our midfield and it’s just ridiculous to think that Wenger would have allowed him to go forward so often for so long if that wasn’t part of his job! Arteta has been the most defensive-minded midfielder at the club since he joined. He needs a physical CM partner. Wanayama would be fantastic, but to be frank, Ramsey was looking pretty special at the end of the season. We do need cover, though.

i would welcome victor wanyama into arsenal midfield over Ramsey

I think Wanyama would be a very good future prospect and would fit into our team perfectly, but with a price tag of a whopping £25 million? i dont know if Wanyama is worth it, but he ddefinetely wants the move to go ahead, so its all up to Wenger.
In my opinion, we should have baught Yann M`Vila as he is 21 and is one of the hottest prospects in Europe, but because of his behaviour was given a price tag of 8 million which Wenger could have brought down further through negotiations. I truly think we have missed out on one for the future. Van persie hade behavioural problems when he first came and Thierry Henry was a bit of a hothead when he came but they both developed into some of the worlds best. WE MISSED OUT!!!

I think victor wanyama will be a good one to arsenal team come 2013/2014 season if only arsenal buys him ,because arsenal need somebody of his caliber to hold the arsenal (CM) I like him because I have watch him play and his very physical ,strong .arsenal should try and grap him before other clubs do so.because in the past arsenal will discover the quality players and allow other clubs to by them is what we arsenal fans don’t want to see anymore we are tired of that lets buy the players that will bring trophy to our door step please arsene winger and the arsenal board I beg u in the name of god.

25million? forget it. He hasnt played at big stage enough.
Id rather capoue for a lot cheaper whos had a fantastic season at toulouse. Real powerhouse him.

Or we could go for the longshot of Bender, but that seems unrealistic.
