Leandro DamiaoTottenham have been in the market for Leandro Damiao for some time now. It’s little wonder too. The tall Brazilian wonder has a massive future ahead of him.

Despite only ever having played for Brazilian club side, Internacional (and for Brazil!), the 23-year-old has still managed to attract plenty of interest throughout Europe.

The height of this interest probably came last summer, when Damiao represented Brazil at the 2012 Olympic football tournament in London. Even though Brazil finished runners-up, Damiao ended the competition as top-scorer, with six goals in five appearances.

He also has a good scoring record at club level, where he’s scored 82 goals in 47 appearances.

He’s also a striker who started his career as a midfielder. This means he’s remarkably good on the ball and is able to put his technical ability to full effect. He’s great with both feet, can beat his man and attack space. He’s an extremely exciting player to watch.

Given Spurs’ current situation upfront, I’m sure fans would love to see Damiao arrive at White Hart Lane.

After all, Jermaine Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor didn’t cover themselves in glory last season.

Whilst Gareth Bale was scoring left, right and centre, Tottenham’s designated forwards were struggling to make their mark. The less said about Adebayor’s nonchalant displays, the better.

Spurs need a forward who won’t be overawed by playing alongside Gareth Bale. They need somebody who can deliver 20-30 goals per season. I think Leandro Damiao may be that man.

But the opportunity to sign him is slipping away. According to The Mirror, Ligue 1 club Marseille are looking to snap him up this summer. The players agent, Vinicius Prates recently told the Press:

“Marseille could be an interesting club for Leandro – especially since there is nothing completed with Tottenham.”

It’s interesting that he drags Spurs back into the proceedings here. Could it be that things are already going on behind the scenes? Or is he just using Tottenham’s history with the player to leverage Marseille’s interest?

Either way, it would be a mistake for Andre Villas-Boas and Daniel Levy to let this one slip away. Damiao has the touch of class that Spurs desperately need.

In the fight for Champions League football next season, he could make all the difference.

What’s your take? Should Spurs look to take on Marseille to sign Leandro Damiao?

If Damiao is this good, and what we need to take us forward, why the hell are we hanging about haggling over £3m – Another one we are going to lose ?

I’ve not seen much of Damiao but whilst the stats above make good reading/headlines I don’t seem him playing in the England friendly a week or so ago and don’t know if he was playing in the game vs France – surely if he’s an international prospect and gunning for a World Cup squad place the head coach (a World Cup winner in the past) would play him – maybe he knows a little more about Damiao that we don’t. This ‘on’ ‘off’ transfer saga is getting boring to read about to be honest and if the player really wanted to test himself, come to the PL and play for Spurs, it would have been done long ago in my eyes – personally I wouldn’t fancy taking a punt at 18mln and I don’t think we should get drawn into an auction with Marseille either.

I think that MAY be a mistake! He has not scored 82 goals in 47 appearances! If he had a record of 1.7 goals a game, i think he would cost a lot more than £17M
