GervinhoWhilst Arsenal fans will be disappointed that their club is yet to make any new additions during the summer transfer market, there are plenty of other reasons for celebration.

New signings will come, but Arsenal need to do a bit of ground-work, clear-up some extra funds and some spaces in their squad. This involves getting read of the deadwood at the club, something Arsene Wenger has struggled to do for the last couple of seasons.

But the signs are good this summer. Arsenal recently let go of ten youngsters that didn’t look capable of making the grade. Then followed the high-profile exits of Andriy Arshavin, Sebastien  Squallaci and Brazilian crab-imitator, Denilson.

These were players who were once considered hot properties. Now, they’ll find it difficult to shirk the ‘flop’ moniker they’ve all picked up.

Add to this, Bendtner’s claims that Arsenal have accepted five (five!) offers for his services, and you’ve got something approaching a mass-exodus happening at the Emirates.

Usually, player-turnover has been met with uproar and disappointment (take for instance, the exits of Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie, Samir Nasri, etc), but this time round, it’s a positive thing.

This brings me to Gervinho, a man whose Arsenal future is in doubt. According to The Mirror, Marseille are interested in signing the Ivorian forward and the Gunners may be interested in selling.

I’m sure that this will have many Arsenal fans jumping for joy. Gervinho is a frustration magnet. He’s become something of a scapegoat for many of the Gunners’ problems.

I think this is largely down to the fact that it’s clear he has talent. It’s clear that he could be doing more. There’s just some kind of mental block, a hex or a curse that he’s placed upon himself that won’t allow him to make good on all his ability.

Perhaps this is why he’s only managed to grab 11 goals in 63 appearances for Arsenal, despite having spent some time in the centre-forward role.

He’s frustrating, because he’s capable of beating his man, leaving people for dead and troubling defences. It’s his decision making ability that’s lacking.

Which is why I’d like to see him get another season at the Emirates. I think he still has something to offer if he gets his mind right. After all, he was probably the best player at last year’s African Cup of Nations. Heck, Eden Hazard once labelled Gervinho his inspiration.

Keeping him at the club may give the Ivorian the confidence boost he needs. Next year could be Gervinho’s year and if it isn’t, maybe then it’ll be time to get rid.

Besides, I can’t imagine Marseille are offering very much for him at the moment. Is it really worth selling him off when he’s still got so much to prove?

What’s your take? Is time for Gervinho to head to the exit door?

    Agreed 100%

I Agree with you. Gervinho and Vermaelen i think should be given another season.

  • wambam says:

Couldn’t agree less. Gervinho has the ability to take a man on with trickery + pace, open up a yard and hit a powerful shot. However he never learns from his experiences, he beats a man once, then faces him again and its like he’s forgotten what he did last time, pauses to remember and then wonders where the ball has gone. Seen it before, you can have al the skill in the world, but if your brain wont make up it’s mind on what to do, you end up doing nothing well. It’s not something that improves over time. get rid now. Maybe a slower league can give him more thinking time.

Keep gervinho in arsenal I believe he will do well. He is a good player who disturb defenders and he can crate chance of goals. He has a problem in finishing

  • stef says:

    Totally agree with you….
Gervinho problem is his psychological, and this year he might master that.

Moreover this year there is no African Cup (2 years in a row he had to leave) so that could help as well

I agree. Gervinho has been made a scapegoat to a degree but he should have really kicked on by now. It obvious the guy has loads of talent, but has trouble staying calm and cool when he gets a chance to finish.
I fail to see how we would gain anything by selling him – we would get nothing for him, and his wage isn’t huge either. He is a useful player for the squad and might actually improve.
Surely it would make more sense to get rid of Chamack and the like, rather than getting rid of players who were at least sometimes effective.
I think we should give him another season to see if he improves.

I think its telling that he plays much better when not at the Emirates, he’s always struck me as someone who doesn’t respond well to the sometimes angry atmosphere there, think it affects his confidence, and that could affect his decision making. This would explain how he can be brilliant elsewhere. Hopefully if we get good start to the season and everythings a bit more positive, he might gain confidence and come into his own

  • Brett says:

I agree that the overall team performance my be a reason for his performance. He did not score a huge number of goals from wide positions but his assist were decent. Not sure the +- 10m pounds paid will be recouped. Probably useful to keep him to add depth to squad especially if AFC progress further in cup competitions and CL. Not sure going away for African Cup of Nations is helping is form and consistency at club level.

  • Alex Antony says:

Right from the word go,it is wrong to tag Gervy a flop!On the contrary,I believe he has done much for Arsenal help than harm.Minus him,the only other man who can open up tight backline is Rosicky.Without these two,we struggle alot back-passing even when we have completely outplayed a team!Gervy is among the top players at Arsenal not a flop!I disagree completely.

  • Marcel says:

Gervinho was fantastic in our last few games, people saying he can’t/won’t improve have absolutely no precedence for such idiotic statements.

  • Wickié says:

Trickery & pace in one pack none has it better in PL but the final product is horrible

  • Pat Rice says:

I think Arsenal fans overestimate gervinho’s “skill” too much, he can dribble yes, but he’s a one trick pony. Watch each game he plays carefully and you’ll see defenders catch on to him quickly
