Alvaro NegredoWhilst Arsenal are hot on the trail of Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain (at the time of writing), I can’t help but wonder if that will be the only striker that Arsene Wenger brings in next summer.

It’s worth remembering exactly how little Arsenal had to offer going forward last season. The extent of the Gunner’s issues can be summed up with the following, haunting phrase: ‘Gervinho played multiple games as a lone centre-forward’.

Right now, you’re probably re-calling the Ivorian’s big miss against Bradford City. Or one of the many times he worked his way into a dangerous position and passed the ball straight to an opponent.

But Arsenal’s other options weren’t that great either. Olivier Giroud was brought in last summer and has been the Gunner’s go-to centre-forward. Despite grabbing a few goals, I don’t view him as a good long-term option. He’s too sluggish, his finishing isn’t great and he doesn’t have a good touch. In fact, he doesn’t have any of the qualities that you would typically relate to an Arsenal forward.

Then there’s Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski, who both view themselves as centre-forwards, but are better suited down the flanks.

Signing Higuain would be a good start, but I would argue that there’s more work to be done in this department. Signing two strikers could provoke the kind of competition Arsenal need to send them across the line. After all, hasn’t that how it’s been at Manchester United for a couple of seasons now?

The Daily Star recently claimed that Alvaro Negredo could be on his way to the Emirates this summer. This follows quotes from Sevilla’s president, Jose Maria del Nido regarding the player’s future: “He has said he wants to develop and that he wants to play in the Champions League.”

Speaking of other club’s interest in the player: “One of the teams is Atletico Madrid and the other is outside of Spain.”

It has been suggested that the other club is Arsenal. This I think would be a good move for the Gunners. At 27-years-old, Negredo is at the height of his powers. He grabbed 21 goals last season and finished La Liga’s top (Spanish) scorer.

He has the physique, build and desire to make an immediate impact in the Premier League. A £15m West Ham bid has already been rejected, so Arsenal will have to spend big to get their man.

Whether or not Arsene Wenger is willing to do so, remains to be seen. I can only hope he’s willing to do what’s necessary.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Alvaro Negredo at the Emirates?

You are spot on…negredo will be a good buy….

We had a lot of one nil wins and with the amount of chances we had were very wasteful in front of goal.

We were still the leagues 3rd top scorers last season but hit 7 against Newcastle and 6 against Southampton and 5 against spurs, reading and west ham helped.

That means 28 of our 73 goals came on just 5 games therefore meaning that in the other 33 games we scored just 45 goals. That’s mid table performance really.

So we need a striker who can convert the chances and not be so wasteful.

I think adding higuain will be the answer but Torres would be a good addition too as he is about to hit a good run of form and for 17 million would be a bargain.

Although I guess he would be a decent signing, your comments about Arsenal being weak up front, I don’t know what team you were watching last season but ‘It’s worth remembering exactly how little Arsenal had to offer going forward last season’ is one of the most stupid comments I have seen . Between Giroud, Podolski and Walcott they were amongst the most potent strike forces in English football. Certanily in the premier league – Arsenal were the only team to have four players score at least 10 goals. These were Theo Walcott (14), Santi Cazorla (12), Olivier Giroud (11) and Lukas Podolski (11).

So I think you ought to either remedy your comments or get yourself some new glasses!!

I think this is gradually becoming one those summers that hope will be raised so high & little will be done in terms strenthen our team. I am getting fraustrated with all these rumour.
I am waiting for the time a player will be annouced.

We honestly need to show seriousness, commitment & aggression in our bid to end our trouphy dought.
I think Wenger & Gazidi has made more mouth that action.
There are more signnings to do after Hugain in the area of defensive midfield & other areas.
We need to conclude on Hugain & move to close deals in other areas.

Dont get all the hate for giroud, hes a way better player than you make out, although he wasnt really clinical infront of goal, it was his 1st season & atleast he was in the positions to get those chances, he’ll be even better next year, im ashamed you’re a fellow gooner, i agree with your points on gerv, theo & poldi though

  • Akuve says:

Negredo’s far better dan Giroud. Infact I’ll prefer him 2 Partner Higuain or Rooney (if itz true we’r in 4 d frustrated red Devil). But we nid a proper front-line organisation if we’re gonna line up Walcott, Podolski, Sanogo, Giroud, Higuain n Negredo or Rooney or Torres or Villa or Lewandowski. I don’t trust Wenger, he cn dcide not 2 sign any of dis above mentioned dudes.

  • camarol says:

I think giroud had a good start with arsenal for his first season. Henry took a few time to be arsenal’s legend. Giroud also can be as great as Henry. Same to podolski both had a good season in arsenal shirt. Give them another change to prove it

  • Pheap says:

Arsenal never buy superstar. The news I have read is not true. Wenger never care for the fans.

  • Hard Ogura says:

With Higuian, forget about Negredo. You have even miss reported that he finished a to scorer in La liga with 21 goal when the Messi, Ronaldo, Athel Madrid man etc were far more than 21 goals.

    Sell him to Tottenham
