Iago AspasPerhaps unsurprisingly, most of the talk when it comes to Liverpool and the transfer market, revolves around Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan trouble-maker has hoarded all the headlines and distracted most of the media from a more important (or at least a more interesting) question: just who will the Reds be bringing in this summer?

Whether or not Suarez leaves the club, Liverpool need to evaluate their forward line-up this summer. Yes, Daniel Sturridge was brought in and has since done a fine job, but you get the feeling that there’s more that can be done in this area of the pitch.

Despite the media’s preoccupation with Suarez, they have found time to link Liverpool to a few strikers. One player who has been strongly linked to the club is Celta Vigo forward, Iago Aspas.

Aspas has come up through the ranks with the La Liga side and has made 233 appearances for the club, grabbing 61 goals. This conversion rate may not be all that impressive (especially given that many of these goals came in the Spanish second division), but he has been in fine form for at least two years now.

In 2011-12, he led Celta to La Liga by scoring 25 goals in 38 appearances. This season, he scored 12 vital goals for his club helping save his side from the drop. Celta’s relegation battle lasted until the last day of the season and the emotion of the day proved to be all too much for Iago Aspas, who burst into a flood of tears once safety was secured.

Some sources, like Spanish paper Marca (via Sport Witness) claim that these tears were a result of his imminent move to Liverpool. He has 8 seasons worth of history with his current club, so it’s not difficult to see why he might feel emotional about moving on.

A price of 9m euros (£7.6m approx) has been mooted. That’s a lot of money for a player who only has a season’s worth of experience at the top level. Given the lad’s passion and clear goal-scoring ability, however, I’d say he’s worth taking a gamble on.

Most Liverpool fans will be looking for more. They’ll want to see more signings and bigger names. Here’s hoping that the signing of Iago Aspas is the first of many to come. As it goes, it would represent a pretty good start.

What’s your take? Should the Reds be in the market for this emotional forward?
