There’s been a lot of talk about how Manchester United are going to get by in a post-Paul Scholes world. Whilst the Ginger Prince was slowly being phased out last season, it would be foolish to suggest that he won’t be missed at Old Trafford.
Scholes at his best was one of the best midfielders of all time. He attracted admiration because he was the perfect all-rounder. He combined intelligence, technical ability, a wide range of passing and a competitive edge. His absence from the England International side has allowed him to maintain his fantastic form at club level for much longer than might have been expected.
There was nobody quite like him. So how on earth can David Moyes be expected to go out and replace him?
For a start, I don’t think Moyes can be expected to go and find a custom-built replacement. There’s just nobody out there who is the ‘full package’ like Scholes was.
If he’s looking for someone to replace the Ginger Prince’s competitive edge, then somebody like Monaco’s Napalys Mendy could be just the ticket. The 20-year-old, has already told his current club that he will be leaving on a free transfer this summer.
This, naturally, has shocked current boss Claudio Ranieri: “I do not understand his attitude. As soon as I saw him play, I said here is our Makelele. I trusted him and I played him. I think he will miss out on a great deal. But it’s his life, not mine. He has preferred to listen to his brother and agent and not his coach. It’s a shame.” (Source: Daily Mail)
A shame indeed. This is a clear case of a player who has had a good season and now has ideas above his station.
Still, there’s clear evidence that Mendy could kick on and become something very special indeed. If he’s already getting compared to Makelele, he’s definitely worth a look in.
It’s not like it would cost Moyes very much. It’s a very cheap gamble to take, but it could pay off handsomely.
Given his situation, there are likely to be plenty of other interested parties. Manchester United would do well to move quickly and snap him up whilst he’s still available.
What’s your take? Should United be chasing this French freebie, or do they have bigger fish to fry?
