Is this £20m goal-scoring ace a good fit for Arsenal?

Gonzalo HiguainFrom all the speculation we’ve seen so far this summer, it seems that Arsenal are hot on the trail of a new striker. Of course, we have to take all the rumours with a pinch of salt, but the sheer number of stories that arrive each day seem to suggest that something’s going on.

After all, this could be Arsene Wenger’s last season in charge at the Emirates (his contract will be over at the end of next summer). He’ll want to make sure he goes out with a bang. What better way of doing this than signing a striker who’s capable of slamming home 20-30 goals per season?

At the moment, Arsenal can turn to Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski and Gervinho. These players were all trialed in the centre-forward’s role last season and none of them really impressed.

Podolski and Walcott look better suited for the wings, whilst Gervinho must be best suited for a permanent place on the bench. Finally, there’s Olivier Giroud, who grabbed a few goals last season, but didn’t do much of any thing else.

He doesn’t provide the kind of movement upfront that Arsenal’s system needs to work effectively. He’s too slow and cumbersome to hold the ball up, can’t beat his man and can’t spread the ball about particularly well.

Imagine what a force the Gunners would be if they had the real deal upfront. Somebody like the £20m-rated Gonzalo Higuain.

The Metro claim that Arsenal are the ‘front runners’ for the Real Madrid striker’s signature and provide the following quote:

“There have already been offers and I hope that Madrid do the best for me and themselves. ‘Arsenal’? They would suit me, I’m still young and I have goals. There are many possibilities. I want to go to a league where I’ll be put to the test.”

With his time at the Bernabeu all but over and the player apparently willing to move to Arsenal, Arsene Wenger would be foolish to pass up on this one.

At 25-years-old, the best years of his career are still ahead of him, despite many seasons at Real Madrid (it’s worth noting that he’s already scored 20+ goals on 3 occasions and missed that mark by a single goal this year).

At the right club, he could really thrive and go on to be something special. I can’t help but feel that a move to Arsenal could be the best thing for him.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners look to snap up this talented forward?

Surely you do not watch Arsenal.

In the same bracket as Aguerro and Tevez, but always very involved in buildup play. He is two players for the price of one. A creative inside forward and a pin sharp striker. He is very fast and will keep up with Theo. Will be our best buy for ages. Buy Etienne Capoue too, the fierce one, alpha dominant defender. Then Man Utd beware. Buy back Cesc and we WILL win the Premier League.

To describe Giroud as cumbersome is an understatement. He turns as slowly as an ocean liner ,has a poor first touch ,is one footed and in the last few games when we were under pressure to hang on to a lead he ambled about aimlessly without holding up the ball or putting the central defenders under any pressure. His body language is poor and that sticking out of his tongue when he messes up infuriates me .I do not believe that he has beaten a defender on a run all season.I was at White Hart Lane when he went through with only the goalkeeper to beat and was caught up by Dawson hardly a speedy defender and fluffed his shot -Spurs went up the other end and scored. This may be a hatchet job but I am sure that those who have watched him carefully will agree.I have been a season ticket holder for 35 years and he is in the ranks of our worst strikers -all in all a player who should not be wearing an Arsenal shirt -he is all that is wrong with AW`s player recruitement over the past years and I have not even got on to Gervinho,Squillaci or Santos.
I have renewed my 2 season tickets but have serious doubts about this years buys but let us hope that AW takes the bait Gazides has set and spends the money on world class players and stops buying from the bargain basement

Higuain’ll be a better additional to our scuard if no the best.les prof has to act fast and sign him.if possible rooney shud follow suit and other better options like fellaini…stil keeping the faith.

Yes higuain will be an excellent signing.
But will wenger pay the asking price of €30mil (£25.5mil)
That is the question that needs answering.

I love that quote, wenger will be foolish to let this chance pass him,20million we can affort it.

I scrolled to comments to see if there was any sensible comments about the portions of this article related to Olivier Giroud. Olivier was absolutely last summer’s best buy. A good finisher with tons of fantastic link up plays. If you watch Arsenal’s 10 best goals of the season, he provided service for 4 of the goals by superflicks and good link up plays. C’mon men! I was also surprised none of his goals made it into the the best 10 picks especially the 2 against Bradford.

  • Andrew asare says:

How many good players would link to Arsenal? yet they end up buying no one only some young players just sell them later, many fans now have no trust in Arsenal, in the transfer market.

  • brian p says:

Surely the buy of the season was Carzola.
How many goals did Giroud score away from home -I believe 1 0r 2 max and I do not recall him scoring against any of the top sides.2 against Bradford sums it up .Sadly the strikers AW bought from France over the past few years have been poor -they may be high scorers there but defences are much weaker.
