Could Arsenal really be in the market for this Bayern Munich star?

David AlabaBayern Munich were able to secure a treble last season, because they have the strongest squad in world football. Every player on the pitch, on the bench and even further down has something special about them.

So when Arsenal pick up a link to a Bayern player, especially a first teamer who made 38 appearances this year (and 47 appearances last year), there’s plenty of reason to get excited.

The man in question is midfielder David Alaba.

According to Salzburg.com, Arsenal are hot on the trail of the Austrian and will attempt to tempt him away from the Allianz Arena this summer.

They also claim that the Gunners would offer him an opportunity to play in the centre-of-the-park, his preferred position.

At Bayern, he’s most commonly deployed in the left-back berth. Arsenal, on the other hand, are strong in this area. Both Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal are competing for their place and adding another body to this area of the pitch wouldn’t be helpful. Still, Alaba’s versatility may intrigue Arsene Wenger.

In turn, Alaba may be tempted by the opportunity to play in the position he desires.

It’s easy to forget that he’s just 20-years-old. The young Austrian star certainly has a big future ahead of him. He’s known for his pace, both on and off the ball, his poise, his dribbling ability and his speed of thought. Boil him down to his basic elements and he’s a zippy, gifted footballer, with bags of energy.

As a left-back, he’s known more for his attacking prowess than his defensive work-rate. Still he’s not shy of putting in a tackle and there’s certainly time for this area of his game to improve.

With Andrei Arshavin already cast aside, Tomas Rosicky getting on in years and Abou Diaby permanently injured, perhaps the Gunners could use another midfielder in the Alaba-mould? Somebody who could compete with Aaron Ramsey on the fringes of the team.

Bayern have no real need to sell, so the player would probably have to push for a move. This remains a very unlikely transfer, but I think it’s one that would be good for Arsenal football club, should it go through.

David Alaba is already a winner at a very young age. Given the lack of winners at the Emirates, I’d say Arsene Wenger could use somebody with his mentality.

What’s your take? Would David Alaba be a good signing for Arsenal?
