Wayne RooneyAll the Wayne Rooney to Arsenal rumours seemed like a bunch of tosh, before Arsene Wenger uttered the following words: “Rooney could be an interesting player for everybody in the world, who would turn him down?”

Is there really a world out there where Wayne Rooney turns up to work in an Arsenal shirt? It’s tough to believe, but now that we know Arsene is smitten with the English forward, perhaps it’s possible?

Wayne Rooney’s future certainly seems to lie away from Old Trafford. He’s enjoyed many years of success with the Red Devils, but seems to be looking for a change in scenery. As a result, he put in a transfer rumour towards the end of the season and set the media alight with speculation.

Speaking to Al Jazeera (via The Mirror), Arsene Wenger commented on Wayne’s current situation: “David Moyes’ first challenge is to go in to Manchester and bridge the gap between him and Rooney. If that is feasible or not depends on his personality… we will see. It will be interesting to see how that will be handled.”

I can’t help but wonder if part of Arsene hopes that the two personalities do not mesh, so that he can swoop in and pluck Rooney up for a good price. Sir Alex did the dirty on Arsenal last summer by signing Robin Van Persie, perhaps Wenger is just looking to return the favour.

One thing’s for sure: Rooney wont come cheap. Still, The Mirror claims that Arsenal have around £100m to spend this summer. That ought to do the trick.

Whilst many will still doubt the plausibility of this transfer, there’s little question of whether Rooney would improve the Gunners.

Despite the damage that the forward has done to his reputation this year, it’s clear to everyone that he’s still one hell of a player. Just look at the way he took his goal in the recent England international against Brazil. It was an absolutely sensational finish, one that’s typical of the man.

Rooney should appeal to Arsenal because he mixes genuine work ethic and graft with remarkable talent and ability. That’s why he comes with the big price-tag (and will demand huge wages).

Of course, Arsene commenting on a player in this manner doesn’t suggest he’s interested in making a move. But wouldn’t it be something if he did?

What’s your take? Can you picture Wayne Rooney playing for the Gunners?

It would be one of my happiest moment in life to see Rooney in Arsenal shirt playing for the club. Arsene should get Rooney, Jovetic, C Greenier, Alaba, Higuan and possible Fabregas, and allow Gerviho,Giroud,Rosisky, Diaby and J Djrou to go

  • Soner Osman says:

I do belive mr wenger really does want rooney and I can see him coming to arsenal despite interest from chelsea. That is of course if it is more important for rooney to be the main man at a club rather then where he can earn the most wages.

  • Duane says:

Van traitor to Man Utd also did not seem plausible last season

  • Mick says:

Only can’t see it for a start would cost about £25 mill more than Van Persi and he’s certainly not a better player and then of course there’s his wages £250,000 weekly no chance. Higuian would be a much better buy proven goal scorer less money and wages

  • Billy says:

Rooney is class but can’t see arsenal putting all that money on him with a reported 250 k a week in wages! (No player should b on that!) higuien would be a more realistic buy. Rooneys work rate and determination would be an assest but fallani, higuien, and maybe an experienced keeper would put arsenal in a really good position to challenge for a trothy next season

  • Al-Auwal Abdul says:

All players that mr winger looking for no body pass Rooney .
