Why this free-scoring £20m hero could be a perfect fit for Spurs:

Christian BentekeThe term ‘unsung hero’ gets bandied about a fair amount and yet, Andre Villas-Boas hasn’t really picked up the respect he deserves in this regard. The work he’s done already this season, in his first year with the club, is remarkable.

Yes, Champions League football could still allude Spurs, but the fact that the club is going into the last game of the season with a chance of re-joining Europe’s elite, is quite something.

Harry Redknapp’s exit from the club could have quite easily had a damaging effect. On the contrary, however, Tottenham players seemed to have gelled immediately with their new manager and the results have kept coming.

Of course, it helps that Gareth Bale has put in his best season yet and saved Spurs’ skin on a number of different occasions. The Welsh wizard has been absolutely sensational this year, but his prominence highlights a weakness in Tottenham’s attack.

The fact that we’re talking about Bale, rather than a high-scoring centre-forward is interesting. Spurs have spread the goals about throughout their team this season, but the lack of a free scoring forward has damaged them on occasion.

Both Jermaine Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor have turned up every now and then (with the Togo forward turning it on as the season ends), but the general feeling is that Tottenham need more force up front.

Whether or not they secure Champions League football, I’m sure AVB will be on the hunt for a striker who can improve the squad and add additional firepower next season.

Which brings me to an article courtesy of The Mirror, neatly titled, ‘Christian aid’. The story claims that Tottenham and Arsenal are looking to duke it out for Aston Villa’s ‘scoring sensation’ Christian (get it now?) Benteke.

This, I think, would be a good step forward for Tottenham, if they can see off their North London rivals.

Benteke was signed for £7m from Genk last summer and unlike last summer’s other bargain signing, Michu, he’s continued to score, even as the season comes to a close.

In his first season in the Premier League, he’s scored 20 times. That’s a fantastic return for a player so young and raw (he’s just 22-years-old). Truth be told, however, he doesn’t play like your typical young forward. Whilst he’s not exactly slow, his main asset is his pace and power. He’s difficult to shake off the ball, can hold it up, lay it off, or turn and face goal.

His finishing ability is fantastic. He’d be a real asset for Tottenham. But they’d likely have to splash out £20m.

But wouldn’t it be worth it? Benteke might be exactly what Spurs need to join the European elite.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Christian Benteke at White Hart Lane?

How many foriegn players come into the Premiership and score a lot of goals in thier first season then fail there after, Ba and Cisse come to mind. I think we need a proven scorer with at least 3 years experiance in the Premiership, dare i say a punt on Rooney might ot be a bad thing

Guys, wake up & be realistic. Benteke is a real possibility – but Rooney, come on. Spurs couldn’t afford him & he wouldn’t join us anyway especially if we don’t make CL.

COYW tonites tht nite, the ball rolls across the goons six yard box in the 94th minute, and a little tap in SIMPLES.

I think he would be an excellent signing , and would even go to £30 m , and the rooney punt wouldnt be a bad idea either . Benteke has been sensational , and having experienced players to learn from would hopefully lead him on to further heights !!

COYS…. WELL DONE LADS , even if we dont get champions league , you have entertained , and have been a pleasure to watch , hope for C L , and pull one out on that OTHER north london club ..lol…
