JoseMourinhoRealMadridThere seems to be little doubt in the mind of the national press that the special one is seeking a return to the Premier League, with many people confident of a remarkable return to Stamford Bridge for Jose Mourinho.

The Real Madrid managers’ time at the Bernabéu is looking ever increasingly as if it is coming to an end, and the manner in which the special one left Chelsea in 2007, perhaps suggests that he has some unfinished business at the club.

His record at Chelsea was superb. He announced on his arrival at Stamford Bridge in 2004 that; “I’m European champion and I think I’m a special one” and he certainly didn’t disappoint. His revolutionary managerial style took the club by storm, culminating in a record 95 point title victory- Chelsea’s first in 50 years.

He also added a league cup that year, to his growing list of trophy successes. The following season Mourinho led his Chelsea team to defend their Premier League crown, and in the 2006-2007 season led Chelsea to a 2nd placed finish, and the FA  and League Cup respectively. His departure in September 2007 left many Chelsea fans bemused as to why Roman Abramovich would let the clubs greatest manager and arguably the best manager in Europe at the time, walk away from Stamford Bridge.

It would be hard to find a Chelsea fan who would oppose the idea of Mourinho returning to the club this summer, however would this be a shrewd move for the Portuguese manager or a step backwards in his career?

There is no doubting the special one’s ability, his record speaks for itself- over ten seasons in club management, Mourinho has led his various sides to a combined total of 7 league titles, 2 Champions League, 1 Uefa Cup and 10 other cup competitions.

His arrival at Madrid in May 2010 was regarded as a ‘Galactico’ signing for the club, who had a very poor season under the leadership of Manuel Pellegrini, the low point being knocked out by second division side AD Alcorcon in the Copa Del Ray. The former Porto manager’s arrival in Spain coincided with the domination of European football by Spanish rivals FC Barcelona. This is something that Mourinho’s critics should take into consideration when reviewing his time at the Galactico’s.

He has found himself arrive in Madrid with the unthinkable task of toppling the then Kings of European football, Barcelona. This is an almost impossible task for any manager, even for one of Mourinho’s calibre. With Barcelona’s falling dominance in Europe, Mourinho instead of throwing in the towel with a move to Chelsea, could capitalise with Madrid and build a squad capable of taking on the giants of German Football- Bayern Munich, for the European crown.

There is little doubt that the manager has failed to achieve what many expected, and perhaps, even what he had hoped for so far. Despite this, many are still talking about his unfinished business with Chelsea, and ignoring the fact that he still has unfinished business with Real Madrid.

If the ex-Inter Milan manager can resolve the reported large scale rifts in his squad, which have reportedly resulted in him only being on ‘speaking terms’ with three members of his squad; Diego Lopez, Luka Modric, and Michael Essien, then perhaps he can start to turn his fortunes around at the club. There is also the issue of his relationship with the Spanish press which needs to begin its healing process. However, there are questions as to whether Mourinho’s relationship with the press can be cured in.

There seems to be a mutual show of dissatisfaction and disdain from both parties towards each other. This is partly down to Mourinho’s persona and his need to be adored and loved by the press. He treats the press conferences as a theatre and it seems as if  the Spanish media do not appreciate the charismatic nature of Mourinho’s character, in the same way as the English do.

After the shock retirement of Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson this week, Mourinho would of fancied himself for the job at Old Trafford, and would of been rather surprised not to have been approached by the club over the role. After being overlooked by the United board, who appointed David Moyes on a six-year contract, perhaps Mourinho would be better suited to continuing his work with Real Madrid, rather than taking a backwards step in his career by returning to work under the axe- wielding Russian at Stamford Bridge.

This is a thought which Mourinho ought to keep in mind when mulling over his offer from Chelsea this summer.
