A case for Arjen Robben at Manchester United:

Arjen RobbenSir Alex Ferguson has stepped aside at a time in which he feels he has handed his successor a team in its strongest state. Not hard to argue with the great man, but the lack of productivity and quality from the wings this season will have alarmed him.

If reports are believed, Pep Guardiola will deem Arjen Robben surplus to requirements when he eventually succeeds Jupp at Bayern Munich. Could Robben come to United and ease the transitional period for David Moyes? (Source: Daily Mail).

Sir Alex was a keen admirer of the Dutchmen, losing out on his signature to Chelsea in 2004 and the winger was a key component of Mourinho’s Chelsea; bringing flair and trickery to an otherwise organised and efficient unit; culminating in a two year domination of England.

This season has been a strange one for Robben; never a guaranteed starter unlike previous campaigns, with Thomas Muller preferred on the right side of Bayern’s ruthless attacking midfield trio. His undoubted class has shone through regardless; in fifteen games in the Bundesliga this season the Dutchmen has contributed four goals and seven assists.

Compare that to the productivity of United’s wingers; this season has seen Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia contribute a meagre 13 assists and two goals between them. The gulf in class is very apparent.

One has to take a step back to really see the job David Moyes has on his hands when he rakes over on the 1st of July. How do you replace the irreplaceable? With Scholes now gone, and the ever ageing Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs and Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra; the core of the teams most successful recent history, are all the wrong side of thirty.

Moyes will have a gradual rebuilding job on his hands. Add to that the failings of United wide men, an area of the pitch the club rely on to a great extent, Arjen Robben’s class and calibre could help Moyes out in this transitional period, as well as adding effectiveness in an area of the pitch crying out for quality.

a lot has been said about Moyes coming in and which players he’d love to bring in. Fellani is a liability, he plays physically and was lucky not to be red carded for the ocassions he elbowed opponents. I’m thinking Reus and Lewandowski of BVB, or even Modric could complete Man Utd, add in there a solid central defender for cover in the event Rio or Vidic are unavailable. Off load Nani, Fletcher, Young, Rooney. For some reason, i think Anderson needs game time to be a player SAF saw in him, and always looking to attack whenever he’s got the ball.

Arjen Robben is too individualistic, selfish on the ball. Man Utd is an 11 man team, and given the physical nature of EPL, he’d be more on the treatment table than on the pitch most of the time. let him go back to chelsea to join Jose..
