Rangers under Ally McCoist – going nowhere fast

Ally McCoistBack in September after the horror show that was the Ramsdens Cup defeat by Queen Of The South, I wrote on this site that Ally McCoist was not up to the job of Rangers manager.

Seven months on and despite the winning of the Third Division championship, my lack of faith in Ally’s capabilities has not diminished, unfortunately it has only strengthened.

Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Peterhead was yet another example of why Ally McCoist cannot cut it as Gers gaffer. It was a pitiful, hapless showing from squad of well paid, full time professionals, against a collection of part-timers full of honest endeavour and determination.

Now, there are those out there who will point to the fact that since his appointment Ally has had to endure so much nonsense, due to off field developments from the Whyte fiasco onwards. Many will feel it would be harsh to criticise him, but I’m afraid that this a weak and tired old excuse.

This season has been a massive missed opportunity. Despite the lack of a proper pre-season preparation, the manager and coaching staff have had more than enough time to work on developing an organised, efficient structured style of play which would have seen the team swat their part-time opponents aside with ease.

And of course, that has most certainly not been the case.

Game after game, the support have been forced the frustration of viewing woeful showings. They may well have secured a title but this must not be allowed to paper over the cracks – Rangers under Ally McCoist are a poor, poor team and there are no signs of any improvement.

Fingers must be pointed in the direction of the players themselves, several of them have been consistently dire, the likes of Cribari, Black and Shiels (all McCoist signings) are more talented than they have produced so the question must be asked why this is the case?

The answer must lie in the management and coaching of these and several others.

If there are indeed issues with the poor attitudes of some these guys, then it falls at the feet of the manager to sort this out.

Concerns must continue to be raised about what exactly is going on at Murray Park.

The management team have some of the best facilities at their disposal to work on all aspects of developing a team. But, watching the side this year it has become clear that whatever work is being carried out at Auchenhowie there are no signs that it is proving to be effective on match days.

Charles Green was criticised for his negative comments on the team and while it is correct to suggest he should have kept his mouth shut on this, and many more matters, can anyone really say that the Rangers team on 2012-13 is not one of the worst we have ever had the misfortune to witness?

Ally McCoist is quite right when he suggested following the latest off field debacle that there needs to be a “cleansing”at Ibrox. I suggest a new broom is swept through the managers office, if we are ever to be proud of the team again.

Exactly right again, though it gives me no pleasure to say so. I wonder if the lack of balance in the mananagement team, i.e. two former strikers and an attacking midfielder, might be part of the problem here.

Aside from the general standard of performances, the lack of desire is particularly worrying. Any coach worth his salt should be using Rangers’ present predicament to install an intense will to win in the players (and I don’t mean Black getting booked in every game because he can’t, or is too lazy, to tackle properly!)

I’d like to see John Brown back in some capacity; hopefully Green’s departure might facilitate this.

  • Ian Miller says:

When they lost the title last year I thought that Ally was definately not up to the job.
However, the disgraceful performances from the team this season was shameful and if it keeps on going they will not see any promotion from the second division. They are overpaid and under managed. The worst team I have ever seen and the first game I saw was in 1946 against Moscow Dynamo. Get a real professional manager to do the job.

  • kenny says:

Don’t agree. McCoist cannot be judged as he has NOT had a fair crack at the whip. There has been invesitagtion upon investigation at the club. Not to mention all the negative coverage in the press. The man has had to endure what no other manager ever will. If you can tell me his head has been totally focussed on football/the team them past 18 months then fair doos. Craig Mather has just been appointed interim CEO. Lets see how that goes. Lets see once Ally has had another crack at the transfer market. Players he actually WANTS. Not players he had forced upon him.

    • Scots George says:

problem with your reply is that Mather was romoured to be responsible for bringing in guys like Ciabri & Faure! So Ally still not have much say in who’s here next season either!

I’ll reserve judgement on him until he’s fully able to bring in anyone he wants, whether that’s when the signing embargo is over or when the CEO is not linked to any signings! Time will tell!

As for the original article, could not agree with the author even if my life depended upon it! He was wrong to jump the gun in September & he’s still wrong now! He’s entitled to his opinion but his and mine are polar opposites!

You are spot on with your summing up of ally mcoist and backroom staff.Every team we have played this season have shown a good passing game of football. What are rangers doing at training it certainly does not look as if they practice passing because we can hardly string two passes together these so called lesser teams show up rangers every saturday.Time to get a manager in that can sort this out i.e Terry Butcher there would be no hiding place for a lot of the rangers team if he was in charge.

  • Tom says:

Personally I would keep McCoist but only on the basis that he replaces McDowall and Durrant with two young coaches that can help him in those areas where he is deficient. (He lacks Souness aggression and Ferguson tactical skill.

The two guys he has at teh moment have had more than enough time. The tactics under Walter were poor but Smith’s unique style of management was a winner.

What is more, neither of these two guys, McDowall and Durrant are anywhere close to following McCoist when he leaves the position in teh future.

We should be looking for guys in their late 30’s; maybe even someone like Neville, Lampard or Terry, that could take on teh role of player coach.

  • James Goldie says:

Could not have put it better myself, he needs to go, a good servant and so was John Greig doe’snt make you a manager though, probably have missed the boat with Billy Davies esp if he gets Forest to the premiership, its a yes for me a good sweep all around.

  • Stephen says:

Spot on Robbie, I could not have said it any better, agree one hundred percent. I have been watching the Gers for about 52 years, and this is the worst team I have ever seen. I said when ally wasn’t long in the job he was never a manager, and nothing I have seen since can convince me otherwise. I want ally to do the decent thing for Rangers sake and resign, then he can move upstairs and be a director of the club he loves.Ally was a legend as a player, but unfortunately legends don’t always make it as a manager,,,,surely he must be able to see this, and hold his hands up, and just say its too big a task for him ? If he doesn’t and he brings the club down even further ( if that’s possible ) then his legend status will be on a shaky peg, us Bears and Bearettes are fed up with his futile excuses and the Club getting embarrassing results. As far as I’m concerned I don’t care who our next manager is, as long as things on the park get better ( and let’s be honest about this its not a hard act to follow ) .Ally says he loves the Gers, and only wants what’s best for the Club, well if that’s the case you can do what’s best by resigning NOW. W.A.T.P.

  • Martinb says:

It does seem a strange scenario, and though Ally has a long history with rangers it does look more and more he’s never going to be the manager rangers needs to carry them forwards.

I guess some feel how many rangers guys can you loose without it feeling like the rangers we know and with Charles Green, I think whether it was to line his own pockets or not, he has got rangers back in the spotlight. I for one enjoyed his cringingly loud comments.

So hope they get someone again as outspoken…….

  • Raegnald says:

Nobody is disputing (most of) this Kenny and he deserves great credit for his conduct and leadership off the park.

What we’re saying is that even allowing for the difficulties he’s faced, he should’ve been able to get far more out of this group of players.

I always defended his right to the manager’s job following his apprenticeship with Walter, however the warning signs were there last season, even before the financial issues became apparent.

(Think of the European & domestic cup defeats and the squandering of the 12-point league lead)

  • John says:

Totally agree McCoist just doesn’t have it as a manager. This constant bleating about the position he found himself in is becoming pathetic. Just look at the facilities at Murray Park and money, compared to other 3rd Division Clubs. His efforts are lamentable. WORST RANGERS TEAM I CAN REMEMBER and probably the WORST MANAGER!!!!!!!!!!! John F

  • Steven Barr says:

I completely agrre with article.McCoist’s signing policy has been awful, not just this season but last where we threw away 15 point lead in league before we went into administration and knocked out of all cup competitions in early stages.
Although we didn’t have a preseason we have been playing against amateurs so after the first month of the season we should have been much fitter and stronger than our opponents but most games we have struggled and I am sad to say have been outplayed on many occasions.
We cant keep saying give him a transfer window to buy players when we are playing in amateur leagues. The manager and backroom team have to carry the can for so many disappointing displays. Look at how Queen Of The South have played with a young manager and tell me McCoist could to the same with that squad. All he would say is I need money to spend on experienced players.

TRFC Rfc (il) SEVCO corrupt to the core !

    • Scots George says:

      AYE RIGHT bfd!

sensible comment! Really helps this discussion!
Try looking to the east end of Glasgow, you’ll find more corruption than you can ever wish for!

As for the actual discussion rather than the cultish ramblings from the east!

I cant disagree that this is indeed the worst Rangers team I’ve ever watched but that has more to do with losing £40 million plus in players than McCoists ability to manage!

The replacements have on a whole failed to live up to their reputations & had that been given as a reason for calling the Manager “probably the worst manager in our history” PLG imediately springs to mind!

As it wasn’t and the situation out with even the clubs control was used (adversely) then I’ll leave everyone to make their own mind up on john comments!

      • Gerry S says:

The actions of the club were not out of it’s control. It was the club that committed the crimes. Tax avoidance. £15m avoided in tax payments.
This is why the Club founded in 1870s has been put in administration and soon to be liquidated.
This is why a new club has been formed.
This is why you have upheaval in the boardroom

The replacement club has leapfrogged many long established clubs to join a SFL despite having no audited accounts for the previous 3 years.

  • BIG Fenian drum says:

Shut the BIG bigot hoose DOON its swarming wae corruption! HH

  • rabbie robertson says:

couldn’t agree more think its tym ally steped down and let sum1 else have a go i think big terry would b a class manager tht cld lead rangers bak 2 the top u just hv 2 look at the team he has built up @ inverness 4 no money and the football thy hv been playing has been a joy 2 watch !neutral point of view i am a dundee fan

  • its all about the rangers says:

i like to look at the facts.ally had a matter of weeks to sign players,if he got the players he wanted fair play but he didn’t.the management and coaches did’nt just appear this season or have you been writing this for the last few seasons? ok performances didn’t get to the standard we would want but in the grand scheme of things im just happy we won the league.i would expect us to improve next season under super ally

  • big ian from torquay says:

I feel that this is so unfair on ally everyone should just give him a chance after all he was a chancer of a football player, he missed 20 chances for every goal he scored, so he might get it right if he lives to about 100 years old, in the mean time all I can do is just sit back and laugh. It’s a shame it wont’t last much longer before the bulldozers finally put it all in the past
