Etienne CapoueArsenal’s midfield is talented, there’s little doubt about that. Santi Cazorla would fit into just about any team, Jack Wilshere is England’s big hope for the future and Mikel Arteta is one of the best players to never make it into the Spanish national side.

But it’s missing a key element.

Arsenal lack an ‘enforcer’ type – a midfield dynamo who can win the ball as well as spray it about.

They had one in the form of Alex Song, but he had his head turned by Barcelona and Arsene Wenger was willing to let him go.

Then there’s Abou Diaby, who must have picked up a gypsy curse at some stage in his career. The lanky, tough, Frenchman seems to be condemned to pick up an injury after every single appearance.

His inability to put a batch of games together has seriously de-railed his career and it’s not clear he has a long-term future at Arsenal. It’ll be sad to see him go, but it’s time for Arsenal to consider other options.

After all, without an addition in this area, the Gunner’s midfield will continue to lack balance. On the other hand, if Arsene Wenger plays his cards right, he may well build a platform on which the club can challenge for trophies.

So, who should Arsenal be looking at this summer?

The Express claim that the Gunners put in a bid for Etienne Capoue back on deadline day of the January transfer window. This bid was rejected by Toulouse, but now it seems Arsene Wenger is looking to get back in the running.

Arsenal are believed to be ready to offer £10m for the talented defensive midfielder, who would certainly add a little more steel to the Gunners’ squad.

At just 24-years-old, Capoue seems mature beyond his age. He’s won plaudits for his expert reading of the game, his desire to put his body on the line and his strong, powerful tackling.

Unlike Alex Song, he’s disciplined, knows his place in the side and would provide ample protection for Arsenal’s lacklustre back-four.

Many have compared him to Cheick Tiote, because of his tendency to attract yellow cards and his willingness to leave his leg in when he feels necessary. Unlike Tiote, however, he tends to avoid picking up red cards.

At just £10m, he wouldn’t break the bank, but he would provide the Gunners with a considerable amount of stability. That seems like a pretty good move to me.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be pursuing Etienne Capoue?
