Should Manchester United swoop for this £10m French enforcer?

Adil RamiManchester United’s defensive situation is perplexing at best.

Whilst Rio Ferdinand grows older, he continues to put in sterling, aggressive, dominant performances at the back. Nemanja Vidic’s legs may be gone, but every appearance he makes solidifies his reputation as one of the Premier League’s best defenders.

And though Manchester United have leaked goals on occasion this season, it’s not like this has been losing them games.

It could be argued that this is down to United’s awesome attack always finding it within them to score (at least) one more than their opponent.

But this wouldn’t do justice to players like Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling, who are more than capable of keeping United in tough games.

Despite this outlook (which is perhaps a little more optimistic than your typical Manchester United fan’s) it would be foolish for Sir Alex Ferguson to avoid addressing this area of the pitch in the summer transfer window.

Despite Rio and Nemanja proving just about everybody wrong this season, it’s difficult to shake the feeling that they’re playing on borrowed time. That at any moment in the next two-three seasons, their top-flight career could come to sudden end.

And it’s important that United have the right players in place when this eventuality occurs.

This brings me a French defender, who perhaps doesn’t get the plaudits he deserves. I’m referring to Valencia’s very own Adil Rami, a tough-tackling, no-nonsense centre-back who looks ready for a move to a ‘big club’.

The 27-year-old has even told the Press that he, ‘needs to play for a big club in Europe’.

Well Manchester United certainly qualify and it looks like they’ll be able to offer Rami plenty of game-time over the coming seasons.

The Express claim that United will face staunch opposition from Arsenal, should they pursue their interest in Rami.

But with a £10m price-tag, he’s worth pursuing. Strong, pacey, smart defenders are hard to come by, especially one with as much experience at the top level as Rami. Combine this with a relatively low price-tag and the Frenchmen begins to look like something of a bargain.

That’s probably why Arsene Wenger is sniffing around. Like Fergie, he knows a good player when he sees one and I wouldn’t be surprised if a transfer battle were to break out this summer. Here’s hoping Sir Alex plays his cards right?

What’s your take? Would you like to see Adil Rami make a move to Old Trafford?
