Jese RodriguezIf you’re a young player, plying your trade at Real Madrid, there’s a good chance you’ll already have accrued a hefty price-tag, simply by virtue of proximity to the Bernabeu.

The club have been such big spenders and have such a fantastic reputation, that they can afford to trade in only the very best players. The same holds true when it comes to Real Madrid youngsters – only the brightest of the bunch will do.

Another club well known for keeping their eye on the game’s best young players is Arsenal. It makes sense that these clubs collide every now and then.

Whilst the Gunners can’t really afford to battle it out for Madrid first teamers, they do have the funds to make deals happen for players with potential (but no experience).

This brings me to TalkSPORT‘s claims that Arsenal are chasing Madrid’s highly-rated young winger, Jese Rodriguez. They’re joined by Bayer Leverkusen and West Ham, who have also been keeping tabs on this bright young spark.

Rodriguez is a player who really began to attract the limelight last season, when he made his debut for Madrid’s senior team. He caught the eye with his quick feet, his pace along the ground and his touch and control. Whilst he’s a raw, unvarnished talent, there were clear signs that he could kick on and become the ‘real deal’.

Unfortunately, he’s playing for Madrid, where talent is often squandered in the name of instant success. This season he has seen his career stall as his first team opportunities have dried up. The time may be right for him to consider a move elsewhere to ensure he’s continuing to progress.

And where better for him than the Emirates?

Arsenal are a club who are well known for developing young players with promise and Rodriguez certainly falls into this category.

The Gunners already have bright sparks down their flanks (Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Lukas Podolski and… Gervinho) but shouldn’t avoid further strengthening this area. Gervinho isn’t convincing anyone. The Ox’s future may lie in the centre of the park. Podolski and Theo Walcott could end up being deployed as centre-forwards.

But given that they have some strength in depth in this area, there’s no pressing need for the ‘complete package’. Somebody who could hop off the bench and do a good job, however, would be a neat addition.

With that in mind, I’d say Rodriguez ticks a few boxes for the Gunners.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be pursuing this Real Madrid youngster?
