Andre SchürrleRecent reports suggest that Chelsea have begun preliminary talks with Bayer Leverkusen over the transfer of André Schürrle.

The 22 year old German plays primarily as a forward and can also play on the wing. Having joined Leverkusen in 2011, he has scored 16 goals in 60 appearances.

In this seasons Bundesliga, Schürrle has scored 11 goals, helping Leverkusen in their attempts to qualify for the Champions League.

Schürrle has represented Germany 22 times, scoring 7 goals. He was named in the German squad for Euro 2012, appearing twice as a substitute.

Bayer Leverkusen confirmed that he would cost the Champions of Europe £23.5 million. Rudi Voller, sporting director of the German club, travelled to London on Thursday to meet with Chelsea to discuss terms.

Asked about the talks with the London club, Voller told German tabloid Bild “Yes, I was in London and I have had discussions. There is nothing more to say, there is nothing decided yet?”

It is also rumoured that Voller is interested bringing Chelsea winger Kevin de Bruyne in as part of the deal. The Belgian has impressed on loan at Werder Bremen this season.

The 6ft German would be an useful addition to the Chelsea squad, who are lacking in strikers and may prove beneficial to Fernando Torres.

An increase in competition may get him to up his game, though Torres has been rather prolific this season, but perhaps consistency is needed.

Chelsea fans may feel they need somebody with a bit more experience, who has spent more time at the top of his game. These kind of signings will likely arrive before the close of the summer, but looking at this Leverkusen youngster is a good start. It’ll provide a solid platform for Chelsea to move on moving forward.

Should he join Chelsea, he is sure to be an exciting addition to the Premier League.
