Rademel Falcao-AtleticoFew will dispute that Radamel Falcao is the most exciting player who may be available in the summer transfer window.

Yes, Cristiano Ronaldo’s future is uncertain, but his price-tag may rule him out of any potential move.

Not that Falcao would come cheap. He’s one of the best strikers in the world, a freakishly gifted footballer and a natural goalscorer. There’s a reason why he’s one of the hottest properties in Europe – he just hasn’t stopped scoring for about four years now.

His physique, control and ability in the air and along the ground make him a threat to just about any defense.

At the moment he’s enjoying his stay at Atletico Madrid, but may well grow frustrated with his current club’s inability to properly challenge for meaningful silverware. If he stays at Madrid, he’ll always be hamstrung by the likes of Barcelona and Real.

It’s not out of the question that he’d be tempted by a big club. But is there anybody out there willing to spend big on him?

Here’s where Manchester United come in. According to Marca (via Sports Witness), Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to secure a massive deal to bring the Colombian forward to Old Trafford. A figure of around £50m has been mooted and that would probably represent good value for money for a player of his quality.

It’s claimed that Atletico are looking to avoid selling to their rivals, Real and would thus be willing to work out a quick deal with United. They may even be willing to let him go for less than his release clause.

Having bought Robin Van Persie last summer, fans may rightfully question whether the club really needs another striker – particularly one that’s this expensive. Sir Alex probably should be spending his money elsewhere.

But this rumour plays true to form. Fergie has always loved to bolster his forward line and hasn’t been afraid to splash the cash if necessary. What’s more, Falcao is the kind of player you can imagine Sir Alex salivating over.

It’s unclear what his acquisition would mean for players like Danny Welbeck or Wayne Rooney. But it would certainly be a nice headache for Sir Alex to have. His club has always attracted the best talent and Falcao falls into this category.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United splurge the cash on Radamel Falcao?
