Are Manchester United set to show their transfer smarts once more?

|

Mirko VucinicDespite his options upfront, it seems that Sir Alex Ferguson is still on the lookout for another striker to add to the Manchester United roster.

The club has been strongly linked to Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski (source: ESPN) and there are now stories circulating about Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic moving to Old Trafford (source: TalkSPORT).

This is despite the fact that Manchester United having one of the best attacking line-ups in world-football. It’s hard to get any better than Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck, but it looks like Fergie is going to give it a go.

As a manager, he has never been one to rest on his laurels. Even when it looks like he’s gathered the perfect squad, he’ll go out and make further additions.

So it will surprise nobody if Fergie goes out and buys another striker next summer. And for my money, Mirko Vucinic would be a more suitable addition than Robert Lewandowski.

Whilst Mirko’s not as deadly in front of goal as the Polish forward (he has scored 15 times in 55 Serie A appearances), he’s a talented footballer, who forms good connections with his strike partners and has a healthy number of assists to his game.

You get the feeling he’d be more of a squad player for Manchester United, but isn’t that what the club needs? Wayne Rooney and RVP will still be the main men next season, but the addition of Vucinic could help inspire further levels of competition amongst the other strikers.

With Fernando Llorente set to join Juventus in the summer, it has been suggested that Juve boss Antonio Conte would be willing to sanction Vucinic moving on, if a club comes in with the right money.

At 29-years-old, the Montenegrin is probably at the peak of his career. He’s a fantastic team player and would likely jump at the opportunity to play for Manchester United. Whilst at first glance this transfer story doesn’t seem to make much sense, upon deeper inspection, it’s not the most wild rumour ever told.

Especially given Vucinic’s versatility. He can play anywhere across the front line as a winger, centre-forward or a second-striker. With Ashley Young looking like he may not make it at Old Trafford and Giggs need to retire eventually, he’d probably be a good addition for Manchester United – certainly better than Robert Lewandowski.

What’s your take? Should Fergie look to wrap up a deal for this mighty Montenegrin?
