Have Manchester United already completed their first summer transfer deal?

Ezequiel GarayEven with all the success that Sir Alex Ferguson has had this season, there’s plenty of evidence that suggests he’s not just resting on his laurels.

Many of us would be content to lie back, rub our bellies and bask in the glory. Fergie, on the other hand, is already looking to secure further success next season.

Important to doing this, will be securing the long-term stability of Manchester United’s defence.

Rio Ferdinand is the name on everybody’s lips at the moment, what with his England will-he, won’t he and his recent return to form. After a year or so of inconsistency, he now looks effective at the back and moving forward (check out his quick feet for Wayne Rooney’s goal v Reading).

But at 34-years-old, he’s only got so much left to give.

The same is true of Nemanja Vidic, who is younger (31), but has had injury issues over the last couple of seasons.

There is younger talent bleeding through, but you get the feeling that United could use an experienced defensive lynchpin – somebody they can rely on in all seasons.

And now, according to The Express, Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Benfica’s highly rated defensive talent, Ezequiel Garay – though whenever they use the word sign, they put it within inverted commas, so take their claims with a pinch of salt!

He’s a player who is also being chased by Barcelona, but it now looks like United are the favourites. It’s claimed that Sir Alex has already agreed a £17m to sign the big Argentine.

His price-tag may have some fans all a quiver. Will he be worth the investment?

For what it’s worth, I’d say so. There’s a reason why the likes of Barcelona are interested. He’s a defender who has his head well and truly screwed on. He’s a sprightly character, covers ground quickly and always seems to be in the right place at the right time.

He’s strong in the air and along the ground and his ability to carry the ball out of defence has pundits frothing at the mouth.

Garay is now 26-years-old and given his failed time at Real Madrid, I’d say he’s due another shot at a big club. £17m is a lot of money for a defender, but given his form and potential, it’s a smart investment when it comes to Garay.

If Fergie already has this one in the bag, then he deserves a major pat on the back. How he finds the time, is anybody’s guess.

What’s your take? Would you be happy to see Ezequiel Garay join up with this Manchester United squad?
