Mario GotzeManchester United have more or less steam-rolled any opposition placed in front of them this season (with a major exception in the case of Real Madrid – and even then it was a close run thing). They’re the Premier League’s Juggernaut, taking on all comers and sending them home with a scolding.

Given their lead in the Premier League, some fans and pundits may well feel that there is no real need to make any serious investment in the summer transfer market. That this squad is strong enough to compete for major silverware again next year.

But this, in my opinion, would be a mistake.

Manchester City won’t be sitting still this summer. Like so many others this year, they’ve been thoroughly outclassed by Sir Alex Ferguson. Luckily for City, they’ve got deep pockets and can afford to bring in players to attempt to redress the balance.

But if Manchester United also recruit, City’s best efforts could be cancelled out.

Given the strength of this current United squad, I wouldn’t be surprised if Fergie was looking at Europe’s best young players and looking to see who could play a role for years to come at Old Trafford.

Borussia Dortmund’s young German talent, Mario Gotze, certainly fits into this category. The all action midfielder has earned a reputation as one of the best young players in world football and at 20-years-old, is already a top-class footballer.

He has been a vital part of a Dortmund side that has won back-t0-back titles (though are slipping this season) and is a disciplined young talent with a sensible head. He’s known for his range of passing, his technical ability and coolness in front of goal (29 goals in 108 Dortmund appearances – a great return for a young midfielder).

He was awarded the ‘Golden Boy’ award back in 2011, the award handed out to the likes of Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fabregas Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi at similar points in their careers.

But would he even consider a move to Old Trafford? In short yes: “Clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester United are attractive and you could develop at those clubs.” (Source: Goal.com)

He may well have his eyes set on a La Liga move, but the fact that he mentions Manchester United is interesting. He’s a player who would fit in nicely in Sir Alex’s squad and I’d love to see him plying his trade in the Premier League.

Yes, United may have to break the bank, but it my well be worth it in this case.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Sir Alex go after Mario Gotze this summer?
