Why a £10m move for this Barca star is a smart bet for Manchester United:

Victor ValdesYes, we all know what happened when Alan Hansen told the world that, ‘you can’t win anything with kids’, but, truth is, nobody knows the value of experience more than Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United.

Witness, for instance, the way that he’s kept players like Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs at the club even when their age suggests that they should be past their sell by date. These players still offer Manchester United genuine quality and must be a major reason why the club is running away with the League this season.

Given this, when United had to replace Edwin van Der Sar a couple of years ago, it was rather bemusing to see Sir Alex opt for a Spanish youngster, who had yet to really prove himself on any major stage.

Yes, his performances in La Liga had already won him plenty of plaudits and he seemed destined for bigger and better things, but there was still a question mark over his head. Even as the positive reports came in, most La Liga-followers had doubts over his ability to control his area.

Given what we’ve seen, over the last couple of seasons, I’d say those doubts existed for a reason. Yes, he’s a fine shot-stopper, maybe one of the best in the League, but he’s also a flappy-handed, rash, impetuous young talent, who is collecting an ever growing catalogue of glaring errors.

I don’t think Sir Alex necessarily got this one wrong. He’s just given the youngster too much too soon. This summer will give the Scot an opportunity to rectify this situation. According to FootyLatest, Manchester United are interested in signing Barcelona’s veteran keeper, Victor Valdes.

The Spanish stopper has been a La Liga fixture for many years, but may well fancy a change of scenery if Manchester United come knocking. The 31-year-old’s Barca contract will run down in the summer of 2014 and the Catalan club may be keen to sell whilst they can still get a good price for him.

Valdes certainly has the quality and experience to make it at a club like United. He’s a cool head, who has seen it all, footbally speaking. He’s believed to have a £10m price-tag and would represent good value for money for Manchester United, as well as providing the right level of competition for De Gea.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United snap up Victor Valdes?
