I thought Liverpool’s next transfer window dalliance would be defined by it’s austerity, but it looks as though Brendan Rodgers may have something rather different in mind.
The former Swans boss isn’t looking to have a couple of causal flings, he’s looking to do the dirty and bring in a genuine, big-money, marquee signing.
At least that’s the case if you take The Metro‘s words as gospel, and why wouldn’t you?
According to the paper, Liverpool ‘are readying a summer swoop’ for Atletico Madrid’s improbably talented winger, Arda Turan. This, I think should be music to Liverpool fan’s ears.
The Turkish International has already has his name listed in conjunction with plenty of top clubs, with the likes of Arsenal and Bayern Munich topping the list, but it looks as though the Reds may be the most serious. It’s thought Brendan is willing to offer the La Liga side £19m to taker Turan off of their hands.
The player’s agent, Ahmet Bulut has already spoken of his client’s desire to move on: “I can’t say the league or you’ll know exactly who I’m talking about but let’s just put it like this, there are only five to six clubs which could afford Arda right now and he’s going to join one of these five clubs.”
Liverpool aren’t thought to be big-spenders at the moment, but I certainly hope that the Reds are one of these 5-6 clubs. He’s the kind of player who could help the club kick up through it’s gears and start competing at the top again.
He offers genuine pace, trickery and threat down the wings and has been instrumental in providing Radamel Falcao with assists this year.
He’s an immaculate passer of the ball, who likes to find gaps in between banks of players, work space and create opportunities for his team mates. He’s also more than capable of shimmying out of dangerous situation and using his quality to beat his man.
Beyond Luis Suarez, Liverpool really don’t have anybody with this level of natural quality. That’s what would make him such a classy investment. As a player he’s only going to get better as he majors and he has the ability to make a difference in tight encounters.
With that in mind, I hope Brendan isn’t too strapped for cash this summer.
