Would Arsenal be right to re-ignite their interest in Edinson Cavani this summer?

|

Edinson-CavaniOne of the most exciting links of the January transfer window saw Arsenal, a notoriously tight club, linked to Edinson Cavani, a prodigious and expensive forward. Yes, it was all rather unlikely, but it was enjoyable to see the Gunners get linked to a higher calibre of player than what they’re accustomed to.

In the end Arsenal only added Nacho Montreal to their squad, leaving Arsenal fans to wonder what could have been.

The speculation was largely fueled by these quotes from Arsene Wenger: “He is a player I like. He would cost a lot of money that’s for sure. We can spend the money but I do not want to speak about Cavani because we have not made an enquiry for him.” (Source: Daily Mail).

This was probably just Wenger honestly responding to the question: ‘Do you like Edinson Cavani?’. Despite this, many Arsenal fans will be hoping that Wenger is genuinely interested in the Napoli forward and that he will renew his interest in the summer.

The bulky centre-forward hasn’t been shy when talking about his future in recent times. Check out this interview in Corriere dello Sport, where he was asked about Arsenal’s interest this January: Arsenal? I didn’t follow anything personally, I discover now. Now in Naples, along with my teammates, we try to give a dream to the people.

My future? I have four years of my contract but in football you never know where you end up and what to expect. But I think only of the present and work to get better.”

Whilst he always talks about Napoli in admirable terms, he’s not so definitive future. He seems to have a ‘what will be will be’ attitude and certainly hasn’t ruled out a move to Arsenal. He hasn’t exactly pledged his future to the Serie A club either.

It’s difficult to underestimate just how much of a difference Cavani would make to this Arsenal side. He’s a genuinely world-class player who is one of the few players in world-football with the ability to replace Robin Van Persie. Goodness knows that Arsenal could use quality of his kind upfront. He could be the man that leads them back to the top of the table.

Of course, Arsenal would have to break the bank (and more than triple their current transfer record) but it’d be a worthy investment. If Arsenal reignite their interest in Edinson Cavani in the summer, I certainly wont be complaining.
