Arsenal planning a summer move for this January transfer target – too little too late?

|

Etienne CapoueArsene Wenger spent most of the January transfer window claiming that he was working around the clock to bring people in.

This seemed to be something he was forced to say. It was almost as though, given the results his team were turning in on a regular basis, he felt like he had to give the fans some good news.

But these comments, regular though they were, turned out to be more smoke than fire. Whether Arsenal were on the hunt or not, Arsene Wenger only brought in one player: Nacho Montreal, a left-back who seemed to be an emergency signing as a result of an injury to first-teamer Kieran Gibbs.

Nacho looks like a top-class talent, but I think Arsenal fan’s are within their right to ask why Arsene didn’t make any more additions to his squad.  With fourth place to fight for, the Gunners need all the help they can get.

Instead, Arsenal fans have to put up with continual ‘summer links’ to players they were apparently in the running for this January. Thoroughly dis-satisfactory.

According to The Telegraph, Arsene Wenger already has his scouts planning for the next transfer window (yeah, right!) and Toulouse midfielder, Etienne Capoue (a man who was linked to Arsenal during the January transfer window) is thought to be his main priority.

I have to say, I couldn’t help but wonder why Arsenal didn’t a holding player, or defensive midfielder this January. After all, Wenger sent Alex Song packing last summer and didn’t replace him. As a result, there’s been a lack of balance in the Gunners’ midfield, with only Jack Wilshere showing signs of ‘fight’.

Etienne Capoue certainly fits the bill. He’s a stocky midfielder, with great physical presence and a knack for getting stuck in. He’s the kind of player that likes to impose himself on other midfielders and at his best, he can help his team to dominate.

The Frenchman wouldn’t break the bank and would be a great squad player for the Gunners. Whilst the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Tomas Rosicky offer little difference to Arsenal’s first-teamers, Capoue would be a welcome breath of fresh air. It wouldn’t hurt for Arsene Wenger to start looking at players who are a little outside of his wheel house. Etienne Capoue would be a good place to start.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be in the marker for Etienne Capoue?
