Is this £20m forward the special talent that Arsenal are looking for?

When he’s not busy disappointing Arsenal fans on a weekly basis, Arsene Wenger likes to talk about how he’s only interested in ‘exceptional players’ – that he’d only add to this Arsenal side should he find a special talent available in the transfer market.

Of course, Arsenal fans may be wondering why he’s not just snapping up players who would improve his squad. It’s clear Arsenal need strength in depth and they need it quick. Waiting around for a miracle signing that may never happen, or may not even end up being effective could force the club into a far worse situation.

Besides, there are exceptional players out there, with clubs willing to sell should Arsenal pay enough.

Take, for instance, Fiorentina’s ace forward, Stevan Jovetic. The Montenegro International is hot property at the moment and is tipped for a big career.

According to Football Italia, Arsenal are preparing a £20m offer for Jovetic. This would surprise me if it were true, but it would also delight me.

After all, Fiorentina have made their position when it comes to Jovetic perfectly clear. Here’s a quote from their general manager, Sandro Mencucci: “Jovetic is staying next season even if Giuseppe Rossi has arrived.”

Still the arrival of Rossi at Fiorentina may well make the Serie A club more willing to sell Jovetic should a decent offer come in. It’s an outside bet, but if Arsene is serious about signing a special talent, pursuing Stevan Jovetic may be a good choice.

Despite playing mostly as a second striker, Jovetic scores a lot of goals. Last season he notched 14 goals in 29 games. This season he already has 8 goals in 19 games. He’s a fine finisher, but there’s so much more than that to his game.

He’s a confident forward, with great dribbling ability, excellent close control, tricky feet and the ability to take on and beat other players. Indeed, he’s not a million miles away from Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.

And isn’t that exactly what Arsenal need? They’ve got their lumpy centre-forward in the shape of Olivier Giroud. They need somebody to provide a more natural link between the midfield and the attack, somebody who can make a difference when teams set-up to stone-wall Arsenal by defending with ten men and hoping to catch the Gunners on the counter.

Since Robin Van Persie left, Arsenal have lacked a special forward talent. Stevan Jovetic could be that man.
