£91m for a single player? Why Arsenal should go for it:

Arsene Wenger’s comments last Thursday sent the Twittersphere and the English Press into something of a spin. He spoke rather candidly about the players he ‘likes’ and this naturally got fans a little excited.

Of particular interest were his comments regarding Napoli’s unstoppable striker, Edinson Cavani:

He is a player I like. He would cost a lot of money that’s for sure. We can spend the money but I do not want to speak about Cavani because we have not made an enquiry for him.”

Whilst he confesses that Arsenal are yet to make a formal approach for the Uruguayan forward, the fact that he’s saying Arsenal ‘can spend the money’ (presumably he’s referring to the kind of big fees it would take to convince Napoli to sell) is very interesting.

Arsenal’s all time transfer record is £15m. Serie A side Napoli would want a lot more than that if they are to be convinced to sell. But with a lucrative commercial deal in the bag and the need to make a few improvements all too clear, perhaps the time’s right to set a new Arsenal record.

The Daily Mail claim that Edinson has a £52m release clause written into his contract and that he’d be looking for £150k-a-week over five years in wages. That would come to a whopping total of £91m. (Source: The Daily Mail).

Which is, let’s face it… crazy money. But Edinson Cavani may just be worth it. He’s a world-class talent, with an unbelievable goal-record (that he’s maintained over 4 seasons) who works hard, uses his power and pace well and seems to be capable of scoring anywhere on the pitch. He would represent a worthy replacement for Robin Van Persie at Arsenal.

What if his goals were to help Arsenal secure Champions League football next season? What if he helped them win the FA Cup and made them a trophy-winning side? What money would he bring in when it comes to shirt sales and marketing?

I think you see the point I’m making here. He’s the kind of player who could help Arsenal to get back on its feet once more. If Arsene genuinely has the cash to spend, then perhaps the time’s right to spend it?

What’s your take? Can Arsenal really afford to be in the market for Edinson Cavani?

Arsene likes a lot of players, david villa(before barca move),mata,ba,zaha etc. But those players aren’t at arsenal so there is no chance of cavani going to arsenal. Two things need to happen at arsenal. 1. Spend or 2.wenger needs to leave that’s the only way for arsenal to get back to where they were

Forget Carvani! With that kind of money we can get 3 quality players to deepen the team for trophies.

Not for those wages, thanks very much.

We just need a player better than Giroud, to be honest we was better of keeping Bendtner he is an international striker. we keep going backwards and selling players we need then say were short of players in positions, every single time Wenger speaks he contradicts himself, i also blame you fans that keep going too matches and making the boards plan work, as long as you attend matches arsenal wont change there ways because the club is all about gaining money, if theres no money theres no plan then things have to change. Please stop getting used as customers and fight for our Arsenal back. Follow me @kyekye45 ill follow back #GOONERFAMILY

And what if we didn’t qualify for the champions league?

If this happens, I will eat my hat in public. Arsenal have decimated the squad yearly for the past few years purely for profits. Then all of a sudden, they are going to spend nearly a billion on a single play! People, please reason.
