Should Manchester United REALLY be in the market for ‘the best midfielder in Scotland’?

“He’s brilliant. He’s a top player and I’ve seen him linked with my club, [Manchester] United, recently. I’d take him to Old Trafford – he is that good. You saw against Barcelona how much quality he has.”

Just who is Motherwell midfielder and Manchester United fan talking about?

“I read what the likes of Andres Iniesta said about him. [Victor] Wanyama’s a top player and, for me, is the best midfielder in Scotland.” (Source: Daily Mail),

Victor Wanyama has risen quickly to fame during the last couple of seasons and is now recognized as one of the best talents in the Scottish Premier League. This is quite something, considering his age (21) and his role at Celtic (defensive midfielder). This position isn’t one that tends to lend itself to much admiration, but Wanyama has had plenty of pundits drooling this season.

Take for instance, his performance against Barcelona last November. It was an energetic, buzzing dynamo of a performance. He opened the scoring for Celtic and helped his side to control the midfield and win the game 2-1. Beating Barca isn’t easy and Wanyama’s contribution ought to be praised.

The only trouble for Celtic fans is that the player has already turned down Celtic’s offers of an improved contract and stated that his wage demands cannot be met. (Source: Yahoo).

It looks like his future lies elsewhere from Celtic Park, but should Manchester United follow Nicky Law’s advice and snap him up?

I can’t help but feel that he’d represent a good move for United, particularly if Anderson continues his creative renaissance.

The worry is that when Paul Scholes retires, United wont have the quality or the character to replace him. But if Anderson can pick up the creative mantle (and share it with the likes of Shinji Kagawa), Victor Wanyama is more than capable of handling the physical battles in the centre of the park.

He’s like Cheick Tiote, but with a genuine footballing brain. He takes up smart positions, knows when to put his foot in and imposes his physicality on opponents. He’s a force of nature. But he can also move the ball about quickly and get attacks flowing. Whilst he’s no Andrea Pirlo, the duality of his game is sure to come in handy for Manchester United.

So I’m with Nicky on this one: Wanyama would be an excellent addition for Manchester United. I wonder if Sir Alex Ferguson takes advice from his famous footballing fans?

What’s your take? Should Manchester United be looking at Victor Wanyama?
