Should Brendan Rodgers strike a Liverpool deal for this blast from the past?

It was only a matter of time until Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was linked to Swansea City’s current captain Ashley Williams.

After all, the Reds seem to be considering their defensive options and Rodgers, the former Swans manager and Williams have a history together.

I’m just surprised it hasn’t happened sooner.

According to The Mirror, both Liverpool AND Arsenal are keeping tabs on the ace Welsh defender.

Honestly, I’m not surprised that Arsenal are interested either. They are completely lacking in stability at the back. They could really use a player like Williams to help add a little consistency throughout their defensive line.

But it’s at Liverpool, with his old manager Brendan Rodgers where he’d fit in best.

Yes, Liverpool fans tend to sing the praises of their star defenders, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger, but with Jamie Carragher on his way out (and threatening to retire too – the old dog!) and Sebastien Coates feeling home-sick, they ought to be considering their options. Let’s not forget Agger’s injury history too.

Without the right recruit in this area, Liverpool could be in for a nasty shock at some stage this season.

But Ashley Williams would be an excellent option and would provide the security the club needs.

The trouble for Williams, is that he only just signed a new three-year contract with the Swans last October. He’s always spoken highly of the club and would surely be sad to walk away from his role as Captain. Perhaps Rodgers could work his old connection to help persuade him to make the move? The Mirror claim it would take around £8m to convince Swansea to sell.

This seems like a fairly decent price for a top Premier League defender with bags of experience and plenty of leadership ability. He’d be someone that the Reds younger defenders could really look up to.

Anyone who saw Williams stand up for the Swansea City ball-boy last Wednesday night will tell you: he’s got a great attitude and he’s not afraid to impose himself whenever necessary. If they saw the game, they’d also tell you that he’s a fine defender who helped nullify a Chelsea attack that included players like Eden Hazard, Oscar and Juan Mata.

All this makes him a great transfer target. If he’s really available for just £8m, let’s hope Rodgers snaps him up.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool be pursuing Ashley Williams?

Liverpool should snap him up, part exchange with Joe Allen would be ideal.

NEVER. Do ur research before writing this article buddy, the guy just wrote a book criticising Suarez for being a diver & a cheater. If he comes in Suarez might eventually leave. The way the Uruguayan is playing at the moment, I’d say pass. Don’t want to sacrifice our best striker for someone with a big mouth

P/X with Allen… No ta! Not even sure if he would have a welcoming return tbh – think about it, Welsh lad born and bread SCFC (pretty much), jumps ship through fear of second season syndrome (and the money)!

You got Allen for £15m and what did we get…? Ki, Hernandez, MICHUUUUU and over £2m change – happy days 🙂

If Wills makes the move, I hope he does it for the right reasons and not the money – doesn’t it bother you the money that is spent on players/ wages and the results you get? Liverpool are better then that, 10x better in fact and the owners seem to have forgotten about the passion the club used to have and the fans STILL have. I think Gerhard is a top top man, Liverpool through and true, stuck with you through thick and thin – you need more Gerhards (and so do we), not so much for his world class but for his passion and loyalty!

To finish, I hope Wills is with us until the end, just like Britton intends to be and Monk wants to be – lovers of the club and loved by the club; football needs more of it!!!

  • Dave says:

Williams is a life long Liverpool supporter but why would he leave to go to Liverpool, with respect Rodgers is building a team for the future so what role would a player approaching 30 years old have. At swansea there is a strong possibility that he will be playing European football at swansea next season he’s skippering the side playing for a brilliant manager and to be honest swan seas record since reaching the Premiership against Liverpool is excellent winning 2 drawing2 and losing 0. Don’t think he’d leave for Liverpool more likely to be Arsenal.

  • Nick says:

You’re totally deluded if you think Williams would leave for anything less than 15 million. Possibly 20m.

Swansea don’t need money and he’s going to be captain next season!

I don’t think Liverpool could afford him.

  • Nick says:

And Allen was replaced by Ki, De Guzman and Michu….with 8m still in the bank from those deals.

You can keep Joe Allen. You bought the wrong player – Leon Britton’s the man that makes it all tick!

  • Dai says:

Why would he leave the Swans for Liverpool? To move up a level and win silverware the Scousers will say. To get to Wembley. Oopps! Well done Oldham! If Ash wants European football and Wembley he is better off where he is.

    £8 million? Shoddy journalism.
