Arsenal ‘closer’ to signing January target – should they close the deal?

|

David VillaAfter a fairly quiet January, Arsenal fans will be hoping that their club bursts into life in the last few days of the January transfer window.

After all, they’ve hardly been up to snuff this season. Errors all over the pitch, a lack of exertion and a void of passion seems to have plunged the club into a full on crisis. For the first time in just about forever, there’s a genuine possibility that Arsenal won’t secure a Champions League place next season.

That’s a pretty sad state for a club that used to compete for titles to be in. The fact that Arsene Wenger hasn’t been active in the transfer window only seems to underline the club’s complacency. Is this how things are going to be from now on?

But there is some hope.

According to The Metro, Arsenal are moving closer to signing Barcelona’s ace striker David Villa. Now that would be kind of signing that acted as a signal of intent!

It’s also claimed that Arsenal’s chief contract negotiator, Dick Law, has flown to Spain to hash out the details with Barcelona and attempt to finalise a move before the transfer window slams shut this Thursday.

The Gunner’s interest has been triggered by Villa’s failure to fully regain his place in the Barca team, after suffering a pretty serious injury last season. He’s back to full fitness now, but is still spending a lot of time warming the bench.

I’m sure he’d favour the regular football that Arsenal would offer, to watching the likes of Leo Messi and Iniesta run the game, whilst he’s on the sidelines. On the flip side, I’m sure Arsenal could use a striker of his quality. Somebody whose goals could help launch them back up the Premier League table and help them secure one of the coveted Champions League slots.

The Metro claims that Arsene Wenger is prepared to splash out £13.8m for Villa, and match his current wages of £110k-a-week. That’s a pretty big money commitment from the Gunners, who aren’t usually known for shelling out a great deal of money on new players.

As things currently stand, however, it’s looking more and more essential. If this signing comes off, it may well save the Gunner’s season.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be in the market for David Villa?

That is just to please the ever unhappy Arsenal funs.Teams that have the will and the money to sign players have done so long ago.At the end AW will say he tried so much but failed.Sorry for the Gunners.

Insult, how could Law and Gazidis open Villa’s bid with a derisory sum of £8m? If I were Barca or the player,Id turn the other way because you can not undervalued an excellent talent. This is a deliberate ploy to tell fans,”well, you see,we tried to buy him but Barca simply refused to sell,so,we pocketed the money to splash big at the summer window”. We now know better.
