Turmoil at Schalke: is now the time for Arsenal to strike?

Everything this season seems to have come together to create the likelihood of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar linking up with the Gunners.

Whilst nothing is set in stone at the moment and we’re still talking on a level of mere speculation, the sheer number of stories in the papers and online media seems to suggest that there may be some truth to it.

But what really gives this rumour a particular verisimilitude is the fact Arsenal are in dire need of a decent striker and Huntelaar is one of the best currently available.

Robin Van Persie’s absence has impacted the club far more than Arsene Wenger must have been able to foresee (though I’m sure most Arsenal fans will claim that they could see this coming a mile away). The likes of Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski just don’t seem to be enough.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on the other hand has genuine pedigree. He has performed at many different levels and top clubs (yes, I know he hit a stumbling block at Real Madrid). His goal-scoring record is, to put it mildly, somewhat incredible.

Then there’s his contract situation. Huntelaar’s Schalke contract will be up this summer, so the Bundesliga side must be keen to move him on whilst there’s still money to be made from his sale.

Schalke are currently 7th in the Bundesliga and they’ve only recently parted company with their Dutch Manager, Huub Stevens. This has caused SportWitness to claim that Huntelaar may be ‘driven into the arms of Arsenal’.

Well that sounds like good news to me. If Arsene can pull off this deal, they’ll receive a quality player with the ability to really make a difference at the Emirates. I’m sure he’ll have hefty contract demands, but it’s time for the club to start taking gambles in this regard.

I know I’m not the only one who’s sick of seeing the likes of Marouane Chamakh taking to the field in Arsenal colours. And when you look beyond Chamakh, there are players like Nicklas Bendtner (currently at Juventus) who simply don’t have the chops to make it at a top four Premier League club. These are players who aren’t natural finishers, don’t have any pace and don’t display technical ability.

In this regard, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar would be a breath of fresh air. Let’s hope Wenger snaps him up this January.

What’s your take? Would Klaas-Jan Huntelaar be a smart addition at Arsenal?
