Having just seen Marouane Fellaini rescue a point against Arsenal on Wednesday, I’m not surprised that the big Belgium midfielder has found himself strongly linked to the Gunners. Indeed, I’ve perhaps been a bit disingenuous to claim that Fellaini only managed to ‘rescue a point’. He did a lot more than this.

Beyond his goal, he was absolutely imperious in midfield and was always available when Everton’s back-four decided to play it long. His physicality and grace on the ball seemed to trump Santi Cazorla and Mikel Arteta’s technical football and the two Spaniards struggled to exert themselves on the game. The game may have ended a draw, but Arsenal will feel a little lucky to have left Goodison without a defeat.

To say that Marouane Fellaini could improve this Arsenal side is something of an understatement. He could be exactly what the club needs to get it ticking again.

Before the midweek game, the Press asked Arsene Wenger what he thought about the gifted Everton midfielder. He responded: “I just think he is a good player. Everton’s offensive game turns around him. He is the target man they look for, and in recent years he is moving further forward.

When he arrived at Everton he was more defensive. Now he is more forward and it looks like he will finish centre-forward. He uses his body well, but he is not a dirty player. He is an intelligent player.” (Source: The Week)

When journalists followed up his answer with an enquiry as to whether Fellaini could do a job at Arsenal, Wenger simply smiled and said ‘Yes’. He too seems to realize that Fellaini is exactly the kind of player Arsenal need. He opted against signing Yann M’Vila last summer and now he needs balance the scales by tempting Fellaini away from Everton.

Whilst Arsenal’s midfield is full of talent, it’s severely lacking in physicality and athleticism. Fellaini would add another dimension to a rather limited midfield.

He wouldn’t come cheap and David Moyes wont want to let him go. But after Arsenal’s recent commercial deal, the Gunners may well have the cash to make a deal like this happen. It’s time for Arsenal to stop stuttering in the transfer market. It’s time for the board to back Arsene with some cash and help him build a proper side. I won’t hold my breath, but I will cross my fingers.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal attempt to bring Marouane Fellaini to the Emirates?

    1. Wenger is a tightwad and won’t give Everton nearly enough. A bigger and better club than Arsenal, like Chelsea, can offer Everton £35m.

    2. Moyes won’t sell to Wenger after all that happened in the the Arteta deal.

    3. Moyes won’t sell to a club competing for the same places that Everton are playing for.

  • Wenger says:

One change to the side might not be the answer to all our problems.
First of all, there’s a big lack of depth upfront. Giroud is a good striker but the problem is that he is the only striker in our squad (chamakh cannot be called a footballer). If Giroud gets injured (God forbid!) or tired like yesterday, we have no option but to go with Gervinho. Yes there is theo who wants to play upfront and also lukas but they are not nearly good enough in the role. And about gervinho, i think he’s never gonna be the striker who wenger wants him to be. He’s a squad player at best. Now that we’ll get the Emirates cash we should go for a proven out n out striker like Llorente, Lopez, Cavani or Huntelaar.
Secondly our wingers are too erratic. Yes, podolski and theo have put in a few great performances this season but then they have been equally atrocious and irritating in many other games this season. We have to get a winger who can come up with decent if not brilliant performances week in week out. Someone like Marco Reus, Lewis Holtby or Jesus Navas would fit in really well.
And finally the defensive mid. The trio of Cazorla, Wilshere and Arteta is just not clicking. Individually each of them is top notch but as a unit they don’t seem to click. We need a tough physical midfielder, someone like yaya toure. Diaby was fantastic to say the least in the few games he played but he’s also probably one of the most injury prone players in EPL history. Wenger should assess him. If there is a chance of coming back then give him a try. Else go for someone like Belhanda, Biglia, Fellaini or Banega.
And lastly and most importantly, get rid of the deadwood. They are the ones who are giving us a financial handicap on the field and lack of depth on the field.

I thought Arteta was what Arsenal needed? How about Jags, Bainsey, Peanuts and Jelavic too? Arsenal, nearly the new Everton.

  • Steve says:

Fellaini would revolutionise most teams. Unfortunately for Arsenal there are much better teams who will want him.

  • Scott says:

If and when he leaves, it will be to a much bigger club.

  • Marty says:

Not a chance in hell he’ll go to arsenal. He’s said he’s happy at everton and if we end selling then it ll be at a price beyond what you pay.

  • buz says:

It was Chelsea last month probably utd. next month …30 million? Then we see who really wants the big fella

  • PabloBrown says:

I can see why Arsenal want the bib man,but I can’t see them getting him. First thing Wenger won’t pay the money Everton want, and Arsenal aren’t guaranteed a CL place at the moment. I can only see him going to Chelsea or a club like PSV.
