The £15m Spanish wing-wizard who could rejuvenate Arsenal’s season:

Arsenal’s poor form is likely to cause fans to view the January transfer window as some kind of savior. If the Gunners can reach the next window, a change in fortunes may well be in reach. Whilst this could be the case, it’s worth bearing in mind that Arsenal don’t just require new additions, they require smart ones.

It’s not a case of going out into the transfer market and snapping up some young talent (like say… Wilfried Zaha). Arsene Wenger needs to ensure that the players he signs can have an immediate effect on the Arsenal first team. After all, the first team is stretched to breaking point at this moment and needs as much help as it can get.

All of which preamble leads me to this rumour courtesy of the Daily Express: it’s claimed that the Gunners are ready to trigger the £15m release clause of Atletico Madrid star Adrian.

The Spanish winger has lit up La Liga over the last couple of seasons and is surely ready to make the step up to a top side. He has pace to burn, the ability to jink past his man (in a fashion that Theo Walcott doesn’t adopt too often), fine crossing ability and an eye for goal. He chipped in 19 goals last season, replacing Jose Antonio Reyes in the starting line-up.

Wouldn’t it be something if the man who replaced Jose Reyes at Atletico were to end up being a hit at the Emirates?

Arsene clearly isn’t adverse to signing Spanish talent. At the moment Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla make up his midfield and they represent two of the most technically gifted (if strangely ineffective) players you’ll ever see. Adding a little Spanish flair down the wings may be exactly what’s needed to help Arsenal open up teams and provide an outlet for the midfield to spray the ball into.

Arsene Wenger doubtless has his eye on Theo Walcott’s contract situation. Should Theo move on this January (or later this summer) a player like Adrian would be a perfect addition and would improve the squad immensely. Whilst there’s a lot of work to be done to make this team competitive again, a move like this would represent a good start.

At £15m, he’d cost almost as much as Santi Cazorla did last summer. If he’s half as talented and just as effective, he’d represent a great signing.

What’s your take? Would Adrian make a smart addition at the Emirates?

The only wazy to get someone that hits the field. Running, is to get an premiere league player now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Gooner says:

Omg this is the must useful thing I have ever hear someone say. All I have said this year is sign a premier league man. Fellaini is my top option and I think we could get a bargain for pienaar who is class and can cross for Giroud

Dude I disagree in his time with arsenal Wenger has shown he will splash the cash Henry a prime example. His big problem is that with the limited resources available he has to get value for money. That normally means he buys a player that can play two or three positions. Secondly do you think he wants Walcott or sagna to go I doubt it and he can’t force them to sign is walcott worth more than 80K a week? I don’t think he is so it is up to him to decide where his loyalties lie. We have all read the reports of 150 million money from sponsorship deals but Wenger won’t get much of that in january. I don’t think too much is wrong with first team it is the back up. if wenger can get rid of Bedntner, Park, Arshavin, Chamakh, Squillaci, Fabianski, then he would still require 8-9 players in over the next year. these I would suggest would be a striker, two or three wingers, a couple of defensive midfielders a defender and a top class kepper. Sczesney showed against olympiakos that he is not quite match fit and has no competition to make him perform better.
