The £12m striker that Arsenal are calling out for?

After Arsenal stumbled away from Saturday’s home defeat to Swansea City, many pundits were quick to note that two-goal hero Michu, was the kind of astute signing that Arsene Wenger himself may have made once upon a time.

Swansea City signed the Spanish ace this summer for just £2m and what a bargain he has proved to be. He’s scored 10 goals in 15 appearances and always looks a threat when he’s on the ball. At 26-years-old, it looks like he’s entering the peak stage of his career and the Swans have really lucked out with this particular signing.

Meanwhile however, Arsenal fans had to watch on as the hapless Gervinho, who looks terrified to the extent that he’s unable to complete basic motor functions whenever he’s on the ball, lead the line. Marouane Chamakh and Olivier Giroud look little better.

How the Gunners could have done with a cheap, but potent addition in the striking department this summer. Wasn’t that the kind of signing that Arsene Wenger used to make for fun?

It seems almost inevitable that Arsenal would start getting linked to Michu after the fact. According to Caught Offside ‘reports’, the Gunners are interested in bringing the former Rayo Vallecano man to the Emirates. It’s suggested that he’d cost the Gunners £12m.

That’s a lot of money for a player that has barely proved himself in the Premier League. But what reason do Swansea City have to sell? He’s working wonderfully for them at the moment and they won’t want to let him go on the cheap.

It’s frustrating to see these kind of rumours pop up. They act more as markers of missed opportunities, than genuine transfer links. Let’s face facts – Arsenal can’t afford to spend £12m on a player who may well burn out in the latter half of the season. Whilst he looks the real deal, he needs significantly more testing before that kind of money is splashed out on him.

Arsene should have been competing for his signature last season based on his stats in La Liga (15 goals in 37 games) and his low price-tag. As things currently stand it’s just another missed opportunity and Arsenal should steer way clear.

All we can do as fans, is hope that Arsene has earmarked a few strikers this summer that can come in and do the job for the Gunners that Michu has done for Swansea this season. But I won’t hold my breath.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal pursue Swansea City’s Michu?

michu would be a world class striker, but don’t you think that we need a defense. we were the club that conceeded less goals in the starting of the season. but now it is just pure failure. i made a formation that will win us silverware if we bought adrian lopez, huntelaar, vermeer, mbiwa, henry, and llornete in january…. check it out below

    vermeer

    mertesacker vermaelen

    mbiwa gibbs

    wilshere

    cazorla
    adrian lopez podolski

    huntelaar llornete

subtitutes/ walcott ( if we keep him)
    szcsney
    chamberlain
    arteta
    henry
    koscinely
    jenkinson

    AWSOME ISN’T ITTTT !!!!!!!!!!

Not really (Wilshere as the only defensive midfielder looks wrong, the GK is unnecessary and I can’t imagine the 2 forwards working well together) but you bring up one player who I think we should do everything possible to sign – Mbiwa. He was brilliant for Montpellier against us, and shows the kind of physical and mental strength that’s severly lacking at the moment. Importantly he did a decent job in the central midfield role, which could really help us out. We’ve badly missed that physical presence since Diaby’s injury and Mbiwa could certainly go some way to correcting that.
I am also intrigued by Adrian – think he could easily replace theo and would probably prove to be a better player. He may not be quite so quick, but he’s more skillful and much more adept when participating in counter-attacking moves. It’s been our problem for years: we wanted to be able to play on the break, hence the pacey players like theo and Gervinho, unfortunately we no longer possess the players with the ability to play a deadly pass or even make the right decision when under that kind of pressure. Henry, Bergkamp and Pires (obviously could list a host more players) almost never fucked up when a counter attack was on – we weren’t good on the break SOLELY because Henry was so fast; decision-making and mentality were key factors as well.

no not really no need to change keepers huntelaar wouldn’t sign anyway lopez and llorente completely unproven and none of them have played together by the time they pulled it together they would broe relegated

  • Dai says:

What is in it for Swansea? 12M just does not cut it. If Michu stays there is the virtual guarantee of EPL survival and 60M television rights money, plus about 900K for every league place gained. Also remember that Swansea has a large unspent war chest from the Rogers (5M), Allen (15M) and Sinclair (6.5M) deals. Michu is currently the EPL leading top scorer. No Spanish player has scored more in a European league this season. 12M? Dream on Gooners!

Proff. lost it long ago.I can’t see the Wenger i knew.Comparatively,Sir Fergie is a number of years older and is still as sharp as ever.Look the rug he pulled off AW’s feet by scooping RVP.

    Gunner by birth

  • Robbo says:

Giroud a poor player on the same level as Chamakh? Really?

  • Steve says:

Michu is happy at Swansea and a perfect fit for the club. He was watched by Man Utd last year but they lost interest when his form dipped in the latter stages of the season, which could well happen with Swansea.
Where does the £12m come from? Why not £13.25m, these figures that are plucked from the air are so amusing?!?!
Survivability in the Premier League for Swansea is worth more than a profit in selling Michu.
Huw Jenkins, Chairman of Swansea City, take a bow son! I’m sure if he wrote a book on how to run a Premier League team it would be a best seller.

  • nadj says:

and where is giroud and rosicky

  • Michu was first offered to Arsene Wenger and he rejected him like he did with Zlatan Ibrahimovich. If he was linked to him in the transfer window the fans would have said, he needs to sign someone with a big name not a two million pound player. The problem is with whoever coaches and motivates Arsenal players as we have well experienced world class players in likes of Carzola, Podolski, Giroud, Walcotts,Wilshere, Vermarlen,Arteta etc…
