Could Arsenal really pull off an audacious move for this Premier League star?

When this particular story first hit the rumour-mill, most Arsenal fans just laughed it off. After Tuesday night’s game, I’m sure those same fans are wishing that there’s an inkling of truth to it.

The Daily Mail have claimed that Arsenal are looking to secure a ‘bold’ swoop for Manchester United star, Nani. They claim that the Portuguese winger has damaged his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson beyond repair and now that his contract is set to expire in 2014, his future may lie elsewhere.

It’s thought that a bust up with fellow United midfielder Davide Petrucci has seen Nani rather ostracized at Old Trafford. He hasn’t played since early November and with his contract set to expire in 2014, Sir Alex may attempt to move him on now whilst he can still get a decent price for him.

If Arsenal are interested in him, he’s a player who could add pace, technical ability and end product down the wings for them. I’d argue that he’d be a step-up on Theo Walcott, particularly in the consistency department (yes, I understand that Nani can be an incredibly frustrating player to watch too).

But that brings me to the sticking point in this particular rumour. Arsenal have been unwilling to offer Theo Walcott the bumper new contract that he desires, so why should we be expected to believe that Arsene Wenger would loosen the purse strings and pay Nani’s wages?

Well maybe there’s a chance that Wenger has given up on Theo, after years of disappointment and the fact that he’s forcing contract demands on an embattled Arsenal side. Nani may be the more expensive option, but he could also represent a breath of fresh air for Arsenal. Maybe Arsene Wenger just isn’t willing to suffer any fools anymore.

I’d love this to be the case, but I admit it’s unlikely. Arsenal’s new commercial deal has offered them more cash to play with, but it’s hard to see Wenger’s ways changing too much.

One thing to remember: Ferguson may well be in a sporting mood, when Wenger comes knocking. After all, Arsene did allow him to poach Robin Van Persie and effectively help him to win this season’s Premier League title. Maybe he’ll be willing to do Wenger a favour and offer him a fair price for Nani. If a bargain deal can be struck, maybe Wenger should snap Nani up.

What’s your take? Would Nani be a good addition for Arsenal, or is he too expensive?
