It may well be that Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has already secured the best deal of the January transfer window. According to some sources, including The Mirror, the Magpies have already agreed a £10m deal for Marseille striker Loic Remy.

He’s a player that’s been linked to Premier League clubs for the last two-three seasons (The Mirror even notes that he had a £20m evaluation last summer) and now a move finally seems to be underway.

That Newcastle forward, Sylvain Marveaux is said to be going to Marseille as part of the swap deal is unlikely to take away from Toon fan’s joy. After all, the Frenchman hasn’t exactly enjoyed himself on English shores.

Injury problems and other issues have prevented him from making any noticeable impact. Loic Remy, one of Ligue 1’s best talents, is sure to be a big step up.

Remy has pace, excellent timing and a real eye for goal. Whilst he’s been frozen out this season, the two previous seasons saw him net 37 goals in 83 club performances. What’s more, he’s versatile enough to play anywhere upfront, be it on the wings or as a striker. Should Newcastle manage to keep hold of Demba Ba, this flexibility may well come in handy.

But Ba’s contract situation has meant securing a move for a player like Loic Remy is essential. Ba has a £7m release-clause written into his contract and there are sure to be plenty of striker-hungry parties looking to secure a deal for him this January (and beyond into the summer). As a result, Newcastle will need somebody to fill that gap in their attack.

Besides, it’s clear that Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba don’t combine together too well upfront. Maybe a combination of one of the two along with Loic Remy will make for a better combination and help to guide the Magpies up the Premier League table.

It’s time to steady the Newcastle ship – Loic Remy, one of European football’s most sought after forwards, has arrived just in time.

For all his faults, Alan Pardew has demonstrated a considerable amount of transfer nous since joining Newcastle. Let’s hope that Remy will be the latest smart signing to add to an ever growing list.

What’s your take? Has Alan Pardew pulled off yet another transfer coup? Will Loic Remy fit in at St James Park?

Marv hasn’t had enough starts because Jonas gets the nod. I used to put up with Jonas but this season I’ve given up on him he’s pap. Everyone spoke about Ameobi coming on againts QPR, however Jonas going off was also a key factor for me.

In fairness to Pardew he has a long history of amazing buys in the transfer market. Not only Cisse and Ba, but previously he brought in Lambert and Lallana at Southampton, Rob Green and Dean Ashton at West Ham, and Shorey at Reading.
Whilst he may seem like a bit of a tool at times, he knows a player when he sees one….
