Arsenal targeting the ‘new Song’? Let’s hope not!

Earlier this week, the Daily Star picked-up on some quotes that had already done the rounds across the internet and applied their own unique spin to it.

It appears that Arsenal being interested in a defensive midfielder isn’t enough, it has to be embellished beyond all recognition.

I’m talking about Arsenal’s link to Anderlecht star and Argentine International, Lucas Biglia. The midfielder has earned quite a reputation for his tough tackling, high-intensity, physical performances. He’s a real dynamo and looks set for big things. You get the feeling that he’d be a good fit at a club like Arsenal, who have a talented midfield, but no real physical presence.

Earlier this week, Anderlecht’s general manager Herman Van Holsbeeck spoke to the Press to admit that the club would be willing to sell Biglia if push came to shove: “If someone pays enough we could not say no but we need eight million euros net. That would mean 10,250,000 euros.”

That’s a figure of around £8.3m. Of course, the Star has labeled this ‘big money’. Really? What must they have thought of the transfers of players like Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres?

Whilst £8.3m is a lot of money in ordinary terms, it’s hard to argue against the fact that Arsenal are picking up a real bargain. Because of the shared nationality, he has earned a few comparisons to Javier Mascherano. Yet the player he most reminds me of is Liverpool’s Lucas Leivas. He can get stuck in with the rest of them, but he can also spray the ball about neatly and start an attack.

Next, the Star label Biglia a ‘new Song’. They are referring to Alex Song, the man who carted off to Barcelona last summer. Whilst Arsenal are on the lookout for a player of his mould, Biglia and Song are two different players with two different playing styles.

Alex Song was a marauder. He liked to carry the ball, he liked to bomb forward and he liked to support Arsenal attacks. He lacked discipline. Lucas Biglia is better organized, he likes to sit back, guard the back four and pull the strings in a different, but just as effective manner. He’s not the ‘new Song’, but he would be a smart addition.

So the Stars’ embellishments may not fit exactly, but should this deal go ahead, Arsenal fans will have every reason to be excited.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be in the market for Lucas Biglia?

    Definitely not !

If we want a small midfield terrier who has a good passing range and who is a sharp and effective tackler then we already have one in Francis Coquelin. What can Biglia do that Coquelin can’t ?

If we get a defensive midfielder I want a Capoue sized one with enough physical domination to scare Fellaini !!

totally agree with u…we need a giant seized dm dat can bully oponents about a bit…dats what is missn in our midfld

  • Eugene Danso says:

WENGER WILL NEVER GONNA BUY A MIDFIELDER ONCE ARTETA N COQUELIN ARE THERE. HOWEVER, NONE OF THEM IS A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER.

  • James gunner says:

The thing is Wenger has got to get rid of his obssession for bargains and promising y stars.Arsenal have been brought down to earth by these so called wc stars. Enough is enough.Who can ever forget Wright?
As pointed out by fans if the gunners had a reliable and not 2nd grade goalie, the gunners could have won either an epl or FA cup or even both during the current dry spell.
Hopefully Wenger will finally go for the trusted brand or else it will be another season in transition. Only Wenger will know when the t word will end. If not the gunners will finally have to go for another guy with fresh ideas.

  • Eugene Danso says:

ARSENAL NEED A NEW GILBERTO NOT SONG.

  • ST says:

Wilshere and Arteta look industrious and disciplined and with Coquelin and Rosicky available for selection, the team looks strong here. The question marks are Diaby who is injury prone and Aaron Ramsey who hasn’t looked good enough since breaking his leg.

I can’t see Arseanl in the market for this player but have seen the club do stranger things.

It’s like Wenger enjoys making caricachore with Arsenal, like some one use to ask if he Wenger was formerly a fan of the club or anti fan before he came to the club. How on earth could this man always fail to replace a player with the one who naturaly plays the same position as the one that left ? Only for him to convert players to different wings which makes them to look unnoticed in the field.what kind of management is this ?

  • bonaroca says:

I do agree with Eugene, I think Arsenal need a Gilberto who could can orginize the defence and at the same time get the forward line going. Wileshire has that talent and so has Coloquen two talented players who actually now only need a figure father.

  • Hard Ogura says:

Harry Coke, To be a good writer, you need to give credit where its due. To call Alex Song undisplined after he has gone with all he did yet he didn’t press to leave then its either racist or biaseness on him. The guy used to do wonders for Arsenal, ever since he left all people have been moaning for a DM player yet at the start of the season they said Arteta used to do everything for useless Song.

There are a lot of players from other continents who have done very badly on and off the pitch like pressing to leave when the team really needs them at that time but you never label them like that eg Flamini, Nasri, Denilson,Helb etc. Were they well displined in their depatchers or on the pitch?

  • Jk person says:

To me i believe that we really need natural DM which will add positive to the team if it’s Bigila well lets go ahead and sign him.

  • sam says:

    Wenger wants a striker, period.

  • steve says:

@hard ogura. Calling song indisciplined is racist? What school did you go to? Oh. and who told you song wanted to stay? Do a google search on recent song articles and all you’ll find is him talking about how he had to leave arsenal to realise a dream of winning something. He’s not even playing at barca,so he has nothing but arsenal to talk about.Do your research before you start insulting people by calling them racist!

  • James gunner says:

Agree withDonald. The gunners need a monster sized Veira clone. The sight of this guy with bone crunching tackles is enough to unnerve the the bravest of the brave.

  • Land says:

Do not b stupid man! Indiscipline the writer mean is not of the pitch, it is defensive indiscipline on the field of place. Do not bring naive issue of racism here please.

  • Roland C Rozario- says:

Arsenal has all the talents in the mid of the park! They need that physical bodied person of an ‘ imposing giant’ where his presence with good techincal ability to phyically man the mid n defense that creates a threat to opposing teams [Period]
