Arsenal look to have sealed their first January transfer – but is it a good one?

By now we’re all more or less fed up of watching Arsenal endeavor to throw away games on a weekly basis. For all the huff and puff, the Gunners seem rather off the pace in recent times. They clearly lack threat upfront, the midfield lacks balance and the defence lacks consistency.

So far this season has revolved around what Arsenal lack, rather than the players they do have, who seem to have been deemed inadequate.

And what Arsenal lack is a Robin Van Persie figure – a uniquely talented individual who can help pull the Gunners out of their slump. It’s little wonder that Arsenal fans are looking forward to the next transfer window more than their next game.

Which brings me to Thierry Henry, who for so long was Arsenal’s own unique talent. The Frenchman mixed sublime skill with effortless pace and finishing ability. He was the Premier League’s most dangerous striker on a year-by-year basis and Arsenal have missed his prowess ever since his form started to dip around the time that the Gunners moved to the Emirates.

That’s why he was welcomed back last year on a loan deal and is surely the reason why Goal.com claim that he’s set for a ‘sensation’ third spell with the Gunners this January. In a similar deal to last years, he’ll join Arsenal for around six weeks.

I’m sure that many fans will view this deal as further evidence that Arsene Wenger is residing in the past. But I can’t help but view it with some degree of positivity. Despite his age, Thierry Henry can still offer Arsenal way more than the likes of Marouane Chamakh. Beyond his pace, he was one of the most intelligent footballers to ever play in the Premier League and that’s the kind of thing that doesn’t leave a player.

We saw how he lifted Arsenal last season and fans will be hoping he has a similar effect this time round.

I will say, however, that I hope he’s not the only striker that Arsene Wenger brings in this January. Whilst Thierry is a great option as a squad player, it’s clear that the Gunners need a striker who can play a regular role in the first-team.

Who this may be, is anyone’s guess – we can only hope that Wenger’s on the ball.

What’s your take? Is Thierry Henry a good signing for Arsenal?

Arsenal need a striker, anyone who has the confidence to shoot from range. I would not even mind calling back Benik Afobe from Bolton. But it is going to be a buy and the possibilities are Jelavic, Adrian Lopez, Llorente, Huntelaar and Demba Ba. However, knowing Wenger, he might just have someone up his sleeve other than these names. Remember how he got Eduardo, when no one really knew who the player was. Hopefully, Arsenal will get a good striker in january who will put in some goals.

You would not mind calling adobe back? You kidding?? We need to buy a proven goal scorer, we get rid of rvp and replace him with someone who has played professional football for 2 years, a mistake itself, and you mention afobe who’s only scored 1 goal in 11 for Bolton? Aim higher!! Where the arsenal, we need world class

    Cazorla

    Demba ba/giroud
    Huntelaar/Joel cambell
    Henry/ afobe

Arsenal not only need an excellent talented striker, they also need decent DM and LB, otherwise will be short to reach Europe next year never mind the top of the premiership, as this is now beyond our Wildest dream. By the way, I think the return of Henry will be a regress rather than a progress.

Mo, I partially agree with you in your note, But for Thiery Henry’s idea, I don’t. Henry Loves Arsenal his presence alone will lift all the young Arsenal squad leave alone attracting new players to sign for Arsenal. Very many talented players just want to rub shoulders with him so that is a bonus to have him with the squad.

Secondly, he not a regular player but whenever the team is stack in the last minutes or in need of his usual magic bring him on like last year at Leeds. He has all it takes to do what he used to do part from pace which has reduced. And I would prefer him behind the main striker as he is very good in creating and conning defenders so that finishes himself.

mvila,ba,lopez shud be bought on de cheap nd posibly jetro willems nd huntelaar plus holtby shud be signed on precontract deals.all these deals shud cost about 30 million which is 10 less dan our supposed 40 million warchest.

    • Hard Ogura says:

How about their wages? There are a lot of good players out there but do they fit in Arsenal style of play and character? You don’t just bring someone in your family without looking at the impact one will make in your life/team. You have even mentioned about 3 mature/experienced strikers who have similar style of play, who will you bench at their age?

what a wonderful player in his days.

    arsenal must improve

  • Victor says:

Surely Arsenal is depleted and needs to rebuild back to front. You need a world class goalkeeper, Arsenal keep losing opprtunities eg the goalkeeper that went to Tottenham from france and QPR. DM Yanga Mbiwa, MidfielderIsco in the middle to help Carsola,Llorente or Adriaan Lopez infact i would buy both in order to compete in the premiership all top clubs have atleast four strikers, Arsenal have one Giroud and nothing else.Buy Zaha now. Sell Gervinho immediately or loan him out and bring Afobe or Joel Campbell , i would not field Gervinho anymore he”s useless. Theo is history judging from history of players who left, so replace or keep him till end of season and forget about making money, stop being a wholesaler of players and rebuild. Please sent to Arsene Wenger he’s a great manager but needs to take advise and forget about managing finances its ruining his reputation.

  • walter says:

Still a master of his craft. He could score more for us in two months than chamackh would all year.

  • goon says:

fellaini is a must he could play striker but i would have him dm. bar is scoring consistently which shows he is no fluke he would be a good striker but i woud prefer a striker that can run at defences and score like henry anelka overmars wiltord eduardo even kanu did all we got is giroud whos more of an aerial player. podolski lacks pace and relys on shooting and awareness. there is no striker that is really a threat with the ball to opposing teams so the weaker teams are not scared anymore.

Walk away from the playstation Kieran. You have not factored in wages.Hate to burst you championship player bubble, but Football is a business unless you are supporting chelsea.

  • Delford Magaya says:

There is a problem at Arsenal Football Club, althouhg we do not know much about what is happening, the club is in trouble and those in authority are not coming out clear of the problem facing the club.

    1. Those in authority are making the job for Wenger more difficult, which means more pressure from supporters, but he is not incharge of finance.

    2. How came players continue to force themselves out of Arsenal football club?

Are those in authority consider taking advantage because they own the team? How come they just keep quite and continue to sell players?

They should not ignore the supporters and other share holders because they have the shares and they continue to destroy the club.

I think those in authority should consider concience for their supporters, other who are share holders and not only consider themselves.
