Adding fight to Arsenal’s slight midfield: who to look for in the January transfer window

After one of the worst weeks in Arsenal’s history (consisting of defeats to Swansea and Bradford City) luck seems to have swung back in the Gunners’ direction.

Arsenal’s passing game returned to its fizzing best to help the likes of Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski pull apart a week Reading side, whilst five talented young players (Jack Wilshere, Carl Jenkinson, Aaron Ramsey, Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain) signed new deals.

Whilst this is (without a doubt) a thing worth celebrating, I can’t be the only fan wondering how Arsene Wenger is going to build on this week’s good work. And the best way to do this must surely be to go on the offensive in the January market.

In particular, the Gunners seem to need somebody who can add a little physicality to their midfield and allow the likes of Wilshere and Cazorla to express their creative flair without having to join the midfield ‘battle’.

All of this pre-amble brings me to the rumours involving Lucas Biglia, who The Metro claims is a transfer target for the Gunners. Arsene Wenger has been linked to the Argentine International for a few seasons now and Anderlect finally look to be ready to sell. Check out these quotes from the club’s director general, Herman Van Holsbeek:

“We haven’t received any offers. I can’t rule out the possibility his agent is offering him to other clubs, but our position is clear. The player still has two-and-a-half years to run on his contract. Obviously if someone pays us enough then we could not say no but we would need eight million euros net.

That would mean, with one thing or another, a fee of about 10,250,000 euros. That would obviously be the fee that would allow us to sell him immediately, we can re-evaluate in the summer, but in January he will not go for a penny less.”

Well, that’s pretty definitive. Anderlecht are ready to do business for around £8.3m and in my opinion, that’s a good price for a player of his talent. He’s a strong, tenacious midfielder, who reminds me a little of Liverpool’s Lucas Leivas.

He’ll battle for the ball, compete well in the air, use his strength along the ground, but, best of all, he’ll be able to move play forward once he’s won it back off the opposition side. He can spray the ball out to the wings or pick out sensible short passes that will help Arsenal to stamp their dominance on the midfield.

So, all in all, a good transfer – if it goes ahead. Here’s hoping that Wenger’s up for this one!

What’s your take? Would Lucas Biglia be a good addition for the Gunners?
