Arsenal fans have enjoyed an up and down season thus far. There have been some crushing lows (defeat by Manchester United and Chelsea) and some soaring highs (like turning over Southampton and triggering a fantastic comeback from 4-0 down against Reading).

Whilst I’d argue that no club in the Premier League is yet to establish any measure of consistency, Arsenal are already behind the pack. This team is yet to gel and as a result, they are somewhat sporadic and you never quite know what team will turn up.

I imagine that Arsenal will improve as the season progresses – that surely has to be the thinking behind Arsene Wenger’s claims that his side can still win the title this season. I get the feeling, that Wenger won’t be scouring the transfer market in the way that most fans will hope.

He has faith that this Arsenal side will come good and has never exactly been a good spender. That doesn’t necessarily mean that there will not be any movement – I just don’t see Wenger spending too much of his purported £30m ‘warchest’. As such, Arsenal fans should concern themselves with realistic transfer rumours, like this one courtesy of the Daily Star:

They note that German starlet Lewis Holtby considers Arsenal to be his ‘dream club. The quotes are as follows: “It was a dream to play in the Premier League and it was a team like Arsenal I would like to play for.” He’s clearly not mincing his words. With his Schalke 04 contract running down, his future is very much in question. Given the players’ declaration, should Arsene Wenger swoop down and snap him up?

The Gunners have already squared off against Holtby twice in this season’s Champions League. In the first game, he put in a mediocre performance. In the second he was fantastic and helped marshal his side to comeback from 2-0 down. He’s an attacking midfielder who always shows for the ball, is able to find space and time and can pick out a killer pass.

He’s fantastic at linking the midfield up with the attack and has been a source of much joy for players like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar at Schalke. At 22-years-old, he’s already shown bags of potential. He’d fit in nicely at Arsenal who already have a reputation for nurturing young talent.

Given that it’s unlikely Wenger will splash the cash this January and that Holtby’s contract situation means Schalke will want to sell for cheap whilst they still can, this is one transfer that’s easy to get behind.

What’s your take? Should Arsene make the swoop for Lewis Holtby?
