Should Manchester United really be chasing this unhappy Real Madrid ace?

|

As a fan of a club who has problems in the striking department, I have to say that Manchester United are particularly selfish when it comes to bolstering their forward line. They have an enviable array of attacking talent – so much so, that this may well put them in the driving seat for this season’s Premier League title. Even moneybags Manchester City seem a little short in this department in comparison.

A team that has Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez leading the line hardly needs to be courting any other strikers. According to the Metro, however, that’s exactly what they are doing.

The Metro claims that Manchester United are ready to make a move for Real Madrid’s goal-ace Karim Benzema, after the Frenchman recently confessed his frustration regarding his current role at the club. It turns out that Sir Alex Ferguson isn’t just after another striker, he’s after one of the world’s best. Why can’t he leave some for the rest of us?

Benzema’s stats speak for themselves. Since moving to Real Madrid, he has scored 72 goals and made 35 assists in 148 appearances. He’s incredibly effective, has a great first touch and most importantly, he will get the team he plays for goals.

And yet, he often finds himself sliding down the pecking order at the Bernabeu thanks to players like Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo hogging the limelight. When you’ve got a wealth of talent upfront, it’s difficult to keep them all happy (as United learnt with Dimitar Berbatov and may well struggle with later this season).

The player himself has expressed his disappointment with the long periods he is spending on the bench: “Of course, I want to play more. I’ve spent more time on the bench than I have on the pitch since the season began, but I’m going to keep fighting and make the most of the minutes I get.”

Very little here suggests he’d be willing to make a move away from Spain, but there may be grounds for a club with the stature of Manchester United to try their hand.

Whether this is an area that Manchester United need to look at, is almost beside the point. Sir Alex has always been keen to improve his forward line, no matter the personnel he has available to him. In that respect, Benzema would be an awesome signing.

Fans may well want a shiny new midfielder, but should Fergie surprise them with this one, I’m sure there will be few voices of complaint.

What’s your take? Would Karim Benzema be a necessary addition at Old Trafford?
