Much of the dialogue surrounding Liverpool football club at the moment involves their lack of cut and thrust upfront. The headlines in the Press that linked their best striker, Luis Suarez, to Manchester City must have come as quite a shock and caused a fair amount of bother.

Luis Suarez has spent the first third of this season saving Liverpool’s hide. On numerous occasions he has lifted the team and provided important goals. More than the goals however, his all round play, technical ability and savvy provide the Reds with something ‘special’ upfront. Without Suarez, Brendan Rodger’s side really would slide down the Premier League table.

I’ve spent all this time talking about Suarez, because beyond the Uruguayan, Liverpool don’t have enough options. They sent Andy Carroll packing to West Ham on loan and didn’t manage to replace him. They’ve struggled since and if they don’t rectify things this January, the situation is only likely to get worse.

Eventually, the goals will try up for Suarez and then Liverpool will have no threat whatsoever. They have to bring somebody in.

Which brings me to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, a player that is looking more and more and more like an essential January purchase – according to ESPN, he’s on Liverpool’s radar. They provide these quotes from his agent Arnold Oosterveer:

“Klaas has not decided. He’s had offers from England, Italy and Spain. It’s also possible he could stay in Germany. He wants his future planned by the winter. In the next 45 days he wants to know his next project and it will be decided by his football ambitions and not by money. His dream is to fight to win titles in Europe and to have chances to be successful, because today he is one of the best strikers in Europe.”

Fans may worry that the claim he’s basing his decision on ‘ambitions’ rather than ‘money’ may rule Liverpool out. Ambition surely means challenging for trophies and competing in the Champions League. It’s up to Brendan Rodgers and co to prove that they can offer Klaas this within the length of any possible Liverpool contract. Offering the right wage is sure to help too.

His Schalke contract will be up by the end of the year, so the Reds should be able to get him on the cheap and offer him high wages. FSG has to push this transfer through and support Rodgers. It may be just what Liverpool needs to shoot them back into contention.

What’s your take? Is Klaas-Jan Huntelaar ‘a must’ for Liverpool?

He’s too old. Should splash out on Cavani like we did Carroll downing Henderson and Borini. If we can afford to waste 35mil 20mil another 20mil and 11mil then we can afford 30mil on a guaranteed success. No need to mould a partnership with Suarez because he already has one with Uruguay and no need to spend any more money on strikers for 5 years+. Champions league next season with them 2 upfront but I don’t think owners will back lfc again after kennys waste

  • We need striker we did not need too rely on suarez becose is not striker he his soportin striker
