Could Liverpool really snap up this Barcelona star?

Despite a fairly abysmal start to their season, draws against Manchester City and Chelsea in well contested games prove that Liverpool can still slug it out with the ‘big boys’. It’s establishing consistency and performing on a weekly basis that has proved to be the challenge. How are the Reds supposed to get back to their best, when they are recording results against the Champions that they can’t against the likes of West Brom (that 3-0 defeat still sends shudders down my spine).

The main problem with Brendan Rodger’s side is that is lacks cut and thrust moving forward. We’ve all seen Luis Suarez’s exploits this season. Despite large questions marks how good a person the Uruguayan is, similar questions cannot be raised over his ability. He’s the Premier League’s in form striker and probably its best player.

Who knows where Liverpool would be without their talisman. He’s saved them countless times already this season. By the time that the January transfer window rolls by, let’s hope that Brendan Rodgers has a plan in place to right this wrong. Liverpool need more attacking options and they need them quick.

Last month, the likes of Marca linked the Reds to Barcelona’s ace Chilean winger, Alexis Sanchez. This rumour naturally got Liverpool fans giddy with excitement. Recently, however, Barca boss opted to pour scorn on the chance of such a move. Asked by ESPN (via Liverpool-Kop) if he thought Sanchez would move on this January, he said:

“The boy is fine and he still has a long contract with us. I hope that he continues to play here at the Nou Camp for a long time”.

This strikes me as the normal guff that a manager says about his players when a rumour like this pops up. Whether there’s any truth to the Liverpool rumours remains to be seen.

We all know what Alexis Sanchez can offer this Liverpool side. Pace and guile down the wings the likes of which Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson can only dream of. Trickery, skill and technically ability. Goals (he has 16 goals in 56 Barca appearances – not too shabby).

Down to basics, however, he’s world-class – something that the Reds current wingers aren’t. It would seriously break the bank, but if Liverpool’s interest is genuine, I hope they go for it. It could be just the burst of inspiration that this side needs.

What’s your take? Can Liverpool afford to go after Alexis Sanchez?

  • Nice article.

Not sure whether Louis Saurez is the best player in the league though, even though in recent weeks he has been exceptional.

Would love to see Sanchez grace the Premier League, but my gut instinct it that, if he does, it won’t be for Liverpool.

But how they need a player like him!
