Could Manchester United finally snap up this long-term transfer target?

|

Surprise, surprise: Inter Milan have learned to their detriment that selling two of their best players can leave a side without balance. You’d think they’d learn from the likes of Arsenal, who gut their side every summer and seem to throw away every chance of success.

As things stand, Inter Milan are fourth place in Serie A, four points behind Juventus, Napoli and Lazio. And they’ve looked slightly off the pace too. Whether they can steady the ship is unknown, as is the future of their ace midifielder and perpetual Manchester United target, Wesley Sneijder.

More and more, reports have emanated from Italy regarding the Dutchman’s lack of fitness and form, suggesting that Inter may finally have lost patience with him (this has recently been claimed by SportWitness, for example). Wesley has had plenty of issues with injuries over his career. Despite all his talent and ability, the time he’s spent out of the game has seriously limited his output.

But this hasn’t stopped Sir Alex Ferguson from maintaining his interest in the 28-year-old. Whilst his bones may be growing weary with the rough and tumble of regular football, they have yet to grow creaky with age. Sneijder clearly has one last major contract in him and SportWitness claim that Sir Alex is keen to ensure it’s with Manchester United.

They also claim that Sir Alex would be able to snap up Wesley for around £15m – a significantly smaller sum than would have been asked for a summer or two ago. Whether this is the case or not, you do get the feeling that there has been a shift in opinion regarding Wesley at Inter. He’s not as irreplaceable as he once was.

But he’s still a fantastic player and Manchester United would benefit significantly from his signature. He was Holland’s best player at Euro 2012 (not saying much, I know) and still has an enviable range and speed of passing. He sees things other players don’t and has the technique to make the seemingly impossible, possible. Despite his critics, it’s hard to argue against him being one of the most talented players of his generation.

If United can snap him up for just £15m, that would surely have to represent a fantastic bargain. It’s been a long-time coming, but playing the long-game may have secured Sir Alex his best ever bargain.

What’s your take? Would Wesley Sneijder still be a good addition at Old Trafford?

Wesley is a fantastic player who can link up well with clevery and our striking force, so he could be a good buy for us…

there is more chance of my cat playing for united than sneijder…he is a man capable of being scholes replacement…he would give united exactly what they are lacking in midfield…which are the exact reasons fergie wouldnt buy him….fergies record in buying centre midfielders has been appalling…not one world class buy since roy keane….and buying sneijder would be an admission he was wrong not to buy a talented central midfielder…fergies only weakness is central midfield…he has never really bought well there or addressed it when its needed strengthening…he wont start now…sorry guys we can all dream…but im afraid its anderson and fletcher until fergie retires and that useless lump wellbeck.
