A £10m steal for Manchester United to consider?

Finally, Sir Alex Ferguson’s boys look like they’re interested in being a part of this transfer race. After allowing Tottenham to grab a result at Old Trafford, Manchester United fought back against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon. They wound up winning 3-0 and were worthy of the score-line, even if the goals came from some unlikely sources.

Despite this performance, there will still be some United fans who believe that their side will struggle to compete for the Premier League this season. With Chelsea in the ascendency, Arsenal looking a better unit and Manchester City a tough nut to crack, Sir Alex’s boys will have to be at their best if they’re to challenge for the title.

But performances against the likes of Everton and Tottenham (and FC Cluj in the Champions League) have given fans reason for doubt. It doesn’t surprise me that Manchester United now find themselves linked to a large number of players, despite January being an awfully long time away.

The latest of these players, is Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama. The Mirror claim that United have sent a scout to watch the defensive midfielder several times this season and that they’re in the market for player of Wanyama’s ilk.

Since joining Celtic from Beerschot AC back in the summer of 2011, the 21-year-old has quickly risen up the ranks, attracting the attention of some of Europe’s biggest hitters. He was worth £900,000 back in 2011 and now it’s claimed that he’s worth around £7-10m.

The player himself is a real tenacious talent. Like Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote, he’s no stranger to yellow cards and is a big fan of tough-tackles. He’s got an impressive physique and a real athleticism about his game that makes him difficult to deal with. He likes to leave his mark on opponents, one way or another.

At £10m, he wouldn’t break the bank for Manchester United. What’s more, given the current state of Scottish football, you get the feeling he may be willing to make a move to a more competitive league. Rangers plummet down the leagues has sucked any sense of competition from the Scottish Premier League along with any sense of excitement and enjoyment.

As such, it may be a match made in heaven for Manchester United and Victor Wanyama.

What’s your take? Do Manchester United need a defensive midfielder? Would Wanyama be a good addition at Old Trafford?

Agree with you about the Scottish Premier league Harry. The edge has gone. If players like Wanyama want to progress then they need to get out of the dead SPL. With no real competition I think there will soon be an exodus of players from the Scottish top flight.
