Why the answer to Liverpool’s lack of goals may not be a striker:

It’s unsurprising, that Liverpool are being linked to just about every striker under the sun. What’s important, is that Brendan Rodger’s makes the right choice during the January transfer window.

Because there is a choice to be made. It’s already apparent this season that Luis Suarez is carrying Liverpool’s attack. There’s no doubting the Uruguayan’s talent and this season he seems to be finding the net on a more regular basis. But it’s not enough. The Reds need somebody they can rely on for 20+ goals a season.

What’s more, there was a crazy decision made by somebody, at some point, to loan a £35m-rated striker out to a team likely to be embroiled in a relegation battle this season. Without Andy Carroll in tow, Liverpool has been forced to rely on young talent.

But if they’re to progress as a team, they’ll need to address their attack this January.

Which brings me to this story: CalcioMercato recently claimed that Brendan Rodgers is considering a move for PSV Eindhoven winger Dries Mertens. He’s also part of a Belgium International side that’s growing increasingly impressive (Hazard, Kompany, Vermaelen, etc). But his most important asset, at least in regard to Liverpool, is his ability to grab goals from wide positions. He managed to find the back of the net 25 times last season – a stat that saw him grab plenty of attention from other clubs.

He’s also got pace, intelligence and the ability to beat his man. Suffice to say, he’s a far cry from the likes of Stewart Downing. Whilst acquiring a striker is Liverpool’s main priority, finding a winger that adds goals to a faultering attack should be up there too. Mertens would be able to do this, whilst providing a more multi-dimensional and direct approach than the likes of Downing (sorry to keep picking on him, but come on!)

Mertens has been valued at around £10m, a figure that may well be within Brendan Rodger’s price range (although you never know nowadays). This, for me, would amount to an extremely smart purchase for the Reds. Indeed, this is the kind of signing Rodgers should be making in order to climb back up the table. If Mertens was brought in, alongside a striker, Liverpool’s attack would look an entirely different proposition.

What’s your take? Would Mertens be a smart addition at Anfield and is he worth £10m?

Buy him he is class. Personally he looks more dangerous, grabs more goals and can get assists than Eden hazard. In Belgium games he looks solid and it is the same with his club: psv. Just buy him alongside a striker like huntelaar or someone! Another player, though maybe more expensive and unrealistic is Alan dzagoev. Come on BR just buy martens; suits your style of play, gets assists, and scores goals!
