Whilst fans and pundits alike continue to round upon Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers (who must surely have the weight of the world on his shoulders by now), not enough are looking at the players the Reds currently have on their books.

There’s too many passengers at the club, too many players who just won’t have any impact over the course of a season. Whilst Brendan Rodgers isn’t exactly blame free, many of the signings he has made have impressed (he certainly has a better success rate in this department than his predecessor Kenny Dalglish) and he’s been somewhat hamstrung by the club’s decision to send Andy Carroll out on loan last summer.

For me, it’s a matter of survival until January, when Rodgers can assess his options, bring in a couple of decent signings and turn his season around. I don’t expect a top four finish, but a Europa League isn’t outside the realms of possibility.

To achieve this, however, Rodgers will have to make the right decisions in the transfer market. Which brings me to this story: Sporten.dk have reported that Liverpool are ready to step up their interest in Danish midfield ace Christian Eriksen.

Meanwhile, the Ajax star himself has confessed that he’s flattered by the link: “It’s very cool that the focus is from one of the big clubs (Liverpool). It’s very special, but I have not really thought about a club transfer in any way.”

When speaking about his future, Eriksen betrayed a certain ambivalence: “We do not know yet. It really depends on the season and how it all looks like summer”. (Source: tipsbladet.dk)

Well, he’s hardly ruled out a move away from Ajax. What’s more, given the fact that he still thinks Liverpool are a big club (he clearly hasn’t been following their fortunes recently), Rodgers would have to be crazy not to pursue him.

We’ve all seen what Eriksen can offer. At just 20-years-old, the young Dane has managed to establish himself as one of Europe’s premier young footballing talents. He’s got a fantastic range of passing, great technique and the ability to turn a game on it’s head. He’s a real upstart and he’s certainly due for a big future.

The Daily Mail claim he’d cost around £20m, a sum that may well be out of Liverpool’s league. You get the feeling, however, that if the club is to progress, they’ll have to make more signings like this. Eriksen could be just what Liverpool need to stir up a January revival.

What’s your take? Would Christian Eriksen be a smart addition at Anfield?
